Successful Reduction of Unnecessary Indwelling Catheter Utilization in Acute Ischemic Stroke Patients at a Certified Primary Stroke Center (S11.002)
CONCLUSIONS: An interdisciplinary practice strategy focused on minimizing unnecessary IUC placement in AIS patients can reduce IUC placement in these patients. At our center, this intervention also resulted shorter duration of IUC placement in the stroke unit and a lower frequency of catheter associated urinary tract infection. More widespread use of this strategy may reduce morbidity associated with acute stroke.Disclosure: Dr. Saada has nothing to disclose. A Culturally Tailored Education Intervention for Korean Seniors Increases Stroke Knowledge (S13.007)
Conclusions: This culturally-tailored intervention broadly increased stroke knowledge immediately afterwards, with persistent gains for 2 aspects. How to extend the intervention to sustain knowledge gains and whether these changes translate into behavior changes and improved outcomes should be tested.Disclosure: Dr. Song has nothing to disclose. Factors Associated with Patients Level of Understanding of Stroke Following Hospital Discharge (P2.387)
Conclusions: Patients with motor dysfunction have higher LoU of stroke as compared to non-motor symptoms. Novel inpatient educational strategies and stroke clinic follow-up are essential to improve LoU in stroke patients.Disclosure: Dr. Taboada has nothing to disclose.

Detection of Presymptomatically Latent Lesions Developing into Stroke-Like Episodes by Arterial Spin-Labeling Perfusion MRI in MELAS Patients (P03.162)
CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that regional ASL hyperperfusion in the presymptomatic phase precedes the appearance of upcoming stroke-like lesions, and that presymptomatic SEs had already occurred several months before the onset of clinical symptoms. ASL imaging has great potential for detecting presymptomatic stroke-like lesions and predicting the emergence of SEs.Supported by: In part by Grants-in-Aid for the Scientific Research on Innovative Areas from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan and Young Scientists (B) from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, and the Re...

Education Status and Ischemic Stroke in Young: A Potential Target towards Future Population Based Preventive Strategies. (P5.117)
Conclusion: Risk factors associated with IS in young patients are different among those with NCE as compared with those having CE. Larger studies need to be performed to expand on our knowledge of risk factors in NCE and CE young IS individuals which can help target population based preventive measures to decrease the rising incidence and burden of stroke in the young.Disclosure: Dr. Vaishnav has nothing to disclose. "Tele" Phone Medicine - Is Hearing Enough? (P7.121)
CONCLUSIONS: "Tele"-phone medicine used to initiate IV thrombolytic treatment in our population shows a higher rate than expected of hemorrhagic transformation and should be monitored closely. Telemedicine, health provider education, and organization of systems of care could help reduce complication rates in this patient population.Disclosure: Dr. Sugg has received personal compensation for activities with Genentech Inc. Stroke Survivors with Aphasia May Overestimate Communication Skills: Survivor versus Caregiver Report (S45.001)
ConclusionsStroke survivors with aphasia can give information on their own communication skills with the Communicative Effectiveness Index_this information may be very useful for therapy planning. However, cognitive anosognosia may prevent this information from being fully objective. Specific counseling to survivors and caregivers may help prevent differences in communication perception from becoming barriers to care. Future research should also explore whether current aphasia treatment.is effective at evaluating and addressing self-awareness of communication ability.Supported by: Kessler Foundation, O’Brien Technolo...

The Association between Meeting Life's Simple 7 Goals and Mortality after Stroke in the US (S45.002)

NIH Stroke Scale Assessment via Tablet-based Mobile Telestroke During Ambulance Transport Is Feasible - pilot data from the Improving Treatment with Rapid Evaluation of Acute stroke via mobile Telemedecine (iTREAT) study (I1-2B)
CONCLUSIONS: In this simulation study, NIHSS scores performed during rural ambulance transport using our low-cost, off-the-shelf tablet-based mobile telestroke system correlated well with face-to-face assessments. Delay of Percutaneous Gastrostomy Tube (PEG) Placement in Patients with Ischemic Stroke in a Large Urban Hospital. (P1.063)
CONCLUSIONS: Our study shows that hypertension, use of AA agents and use of tPA puts stroke patients at risk of having a delay in PEG placement. Prior studies have shown that aspirin use is not associated with increased bleeding complications during PEG placement. Education can help avoid delay in PEG tube placement due to aspirin use. Early PEG placement in ischemic stroke patients may improve clinical outcome and decrease hospital costs.Disclosure: Dr. Raval has nothing to disclose. Dr. Rayi has nothing to disclose. Nationwide Patterns of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Utilization among Stroke and Transient Ischemic Attack Patients in the Emergency Department (P2.309)
CONCLUSIONS: Nationwide patterns of MRI utilization among ischemic stroke and TIA patients demonstrate variations given an urban vs. rural setting and the patient’s triage status. These results characterize factors associated with MRI use in the ED and may guide efforts in better understanding MRI use in EDs among ischemic stroke and TIA patients on a nationwide basis.Disclosure: Dr. Ng has nothing to disclose.
