Cu < sub > 3 < /sub > (hexaamino triphenylhexane) < sub > 2 < /sub > /reduced graphene oxide composites with boosting electron-transfer properties for acetaminophen electrocatalytic degradation
In this study, a novel composite of Cu3(hexaamino triphenylhexane)2 [Cu3(HITP)2] and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) was synthesized to construct electron-transfer pathways between the two layers. Benefiting from the connection formed through RGO-O-N-Cu, the electron transfer from RGO to Cu3(HITP)2 was accelerated. The resettled charge distribution led the C atoms in the RGO layer, and the Cu and C atoms in Cu3(HITP)2 layer acted as the main surface active sites. O2•-, 1O2, and reactive chlorine were then triggered to boost the degradation of acetaminophen. The source of O2•- and 1O2 was more likely from surface oxygen gr...

Quantification of pharmaceuticals in hospital effluent: Weighted ranking of environmental risk using a fuzzy hybrid multicriteria method
Chemosphere. 2023 Jul 3:139368. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2023.139368. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAn analytical method for quantification of seventeen pharmaceuticals and one metabolite was validated and applied in the analysis of hospital effluent samples. Two different sampling strategies were used: seasonal sampling, with 7 samples collected bimonthly; and hourly sampling, with 12 samples collected during 12 h. Thus, the variability was both seasonal and within the same day. High variability was observed in the measured concentrations of the pharmaceuticals and the metabolite. The quantification method, performed us...

Structural and performance variation of PES/PVDF membranes after exposure to the pretreated feed water of CECs
In this study, the removal efficiency of chemicals of emerging concerns (CECs) was evaluated under exposure to various doses of UV/H2O2-based oxidation processes in combination with membrane filtration for three cleaning cycles. Polyethersulphone (PES) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) materials based membranes were used for this study. The chemical cleaning of the membranes was performed by immersion of the membranes into 1 N HCl followed by adding 3000 mg.L-1 NaOCl for 1hr. Degradation and filtration performance was evaluated using Liquid Chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and total organic carbon (...

Fixed bed column experiments using cotton gin waste and walnut shells-derived biochar as low-cost solutions to removing pharmaceuticals from aqueous solutions
This study evaluated the ability for biochar produced from cotton gin waste (CG700) and walnut shells (WS800) to remove four pharmaceuticals (ACT, SPY, IBP, and DCT) from aqueous solution. Physico-chemical properties of the biochar were characterized by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), and zeta potential. An increase in pyrolysis temperature during the production of WS800 led to an increase in the specific surface area and increased dehydration of the biochar represented by the loss of the OH-group. Fixed-bed column experiments were ...

Photo-transformation of acetaminophen sensitized by Fluoroquinolones in the presence of bromide
This study investigated the photochemical properties of two representative FQs, i.e., norfloxacin (NORF) and ofloxacin (OFLO). Results showed that both FQs could sensitize the photo-transformation of acetaminophen under UV-A irradiation, during which excited triplet state (3FQ*) was the main active species. In the presence of 3 mM Br‾, the photolysis rate of acetaminophen increased by 56.3% and 113.5% in the 10 μM NORF and OFLO solutions, respectively. Such an effect was ascribed to the generation of reactive bromine species (RBS), which was verified by 3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazole (DMPZ) probing approach. 3FQ* reacted with...

Insight into iron oxychloride composite bone char for peroxymonosulfate activation: Mechanism of singlet oxygen evolution for selective degradation of organic pollutants
Chemosphere. 2023 Mar 22;326:138471. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2023.138471. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe activity of iron-based catalysts in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) is limited by the redox cycle of Fe(III) and Fe(II). In this work, iron oxychloride (FeOCl) with a unique layered structure was loaded on the bone char (BC) to enhance the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Characterization of the FeOCl-BC catalyst reveals that the loading of FeOCl changed the composition and structure of BC and BC reduced the bond gap of FeOCl. Acetaminophen (APAP) as a target pollutant could be almost completely degraded...

Removal of pharmaceuticals from aqueous medium by alginate/polypyrrole/ZnFe < sub > 2 < /sub > O < sub > 4 < /sub > beads via magnetic field enhanced adsorption
Chemosphere. 2023 Jan 3:137734. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2022.137734. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe physicochemical and structural characteristics of the magnetic materials can be modulable due to exposition to a magnetic field, which allows, for example, to enhance its adsorption performance. In this sense, this study describes the preparation of magnetic beads of alginate/polypyrrole/ZnFe2O4 (Alg/PPy/ZnFe2O4) and investigates the effect of an external magnetic field (EMF) on their adsorption performance towards two overconsumed drugs, acetaminophen (ACT) and ibuprofen (IBU). Characterization analyses confirmed the ...

Closing the loop: Upcycling secondary waste materials into nanoarchitectured carbon composites for the electrochemical degradation of pharmaceuticals
In this study, we demonstrated the application of electrochemical oxidation as a safer and cleaner technology for minimizing the impact of pharmaceuticals in wastewaters, simultaneously mediated by upcycled secondary waste materials (SWMs)-derived electrodes, to further reduce their environmental impact. The modularity, scalability, ease of operation and reliability make electrochemical oxidation an ideal process for the destruction of emerging persistent pollutants; however, their full-scale application is hindered by energy efficiency and the potential release of toxic by-products. Thus, the answer to these issues can be...
