Zika Virus Replicates in the Vagina of Mice with Intact Interferon Signaling
J Virol. 2022 Aug 30:e0121922. doi: 10.1128/jvi.01219-22. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTZika virus (ZIKV) is unusual among flaviviruses in its ability to spread between humans through sexual contact, as well as by mosquitoes. Sexual transmission has the potential to change the epidemiology and geographic range of ZIKV compared to mosquito-borne transmission and potentially could produce distinct clinical manifestations, so it is important to understand the host mechanisms that control susceptibility to sexually transmitted ZIKV. ZIKV replicates poorly in wild-type mice following subcutaneous inoculation, so most ZIKV patho...

Prevalence and Incidence of Sexually Transmitted Infection in Injectable Progestin Contraception Users in South Africa
DISCUSSION: Among South African participants enrolled in VOICE, DMPA-IM and NETEN users differed in prevalence of HSV-2 at baseline but did not differ in the incidence of chlamydia, gonorrhea, trichomoniasis, syphilis, or HSV-2 infection. Differential HIV-1 acquisition, previously demonstrated in this cohort, does not appear to be explained by differential STI acquisition. However, the high incidence of multiple STIs reinforces the need to accelerate access to comprehensive sexual and reproductive health services.PMID:35669097 | PMC:PMC9165437 | DOI:10.3389/frph.2021.668685

Depo Medroxyprogesterone (DMPA) Promotes Papillomavirus Infections but Does Not Accelerate Disease Progression in the Anogenital Tract of a Mouse Model
Viruses. 2022 May 6;14(5):980. doi: 10.3390/v14050980.ABSTRACTContraceptives such as Depo-medroxyprogesterone (DMPA) are used by an estimated 34 million women worldwide. DMPA has been associated with increased risk of several viral infections including Herpes simplex virus-2 (HSV-2) and Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). In the current study, we used the mouse papillomavirus (MmuPV1) anogenital infection model to test two hypotheses: (1) contraceptives such as DMPA increase the susceptibility of the anogenital tract to viral infection and (2) long-term contraceptive administration induces more advanced disease at the anog...

Incidence of herpes simplex virus type 2 infection among African women using depot medroxyprogesterone acetate, a copper intrauterine device, or a levonorgestrel implant for contraception: a nested randomized trial
Clin Infect Dis. 2021 Dec 15:ciab1027. doi: 10.1093/cid/ciab1027. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Globally, women have higher herpes simplex type 2 (HSV-2) prevalence than men; data from observational studies suggest a possible association of HSV-2 acquisition with use of intramuscular depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA-IM).METHODS: Within a randomized trial of the effect of three contraceptive methods - DMPA-IM, a copper intrauterine device (IUD), and a levonorgestrel (LNG) implant - on HIV acquisition, we assessed HSV-2 acquisition. HSV-2 and HIV seronegative women, aged 16-35 years, and seeking effective ...
