Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) approach for patients with Roux-en-Y gastric bypass: a comparative study between four ERCP techniques with proposed management algorithm
CONCLUSION: Procedure success was similar between GAE, RGA, and EDGE, but superior to BAE. AE rates were similar between approaches.PMID:37690929 | DOI:10.1016/j.soard.2023.08.005

Short-term cardiovascular events after bariatric surgery in patients with metabolic syndrome
CONCLUSIONS: Patients with MetS have an increased frequency of cardiac events following bariatric surgery. Future studies should determine if optimization of 1 or more components of MetS or other related co-morbidities reduces the cardiovascular risk for patients.PMID:37659898 | DOI:10.1016/j.soard.2023.07.009

Approach to the Patient with Youth-Onset Type 2 Diabetes
J Clin Endocrinol Metab. 2023 Aug 16:dgad482. doi: 10.1210/clinem/dgad482. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTYouth-onset type 2 diabetes is a growing epidemic with a rising incidence worldwide. Although the pathogenesis and diagnosis of youth-onset type 2 diabetes are similar to adult-onset type 2 diabetes, youth-onset type 2 diabetes is unique, with greater insulin resistance, insulin hypersecretion, and faster progression of pancreatic beta cell function decline. Individuals with youth-onset type 2 diabetes also develop complications at higher rates within short periods of time compared to adults with type 2 diabetes or yout...

Changes in physical function and physical activity in patients up to 5 years after bariatric surgery
CONCLUSIONS: Functional abilities of bariatric surgery patients increased postoperatively and were maintained over 5 years. However, treadmill testing suggests that most patients are still unable to perform sustained activities of 6 METs (vigorous) or greater. Research is needed on bariatric patients' long-term function- and intervention- optimizing outcomes.PMID:37563066 | DOI:10.1016/j.soard.2023.06.011

Financial toxicity risk among patients with gastric banding complications in the United States: analysis of the National Inpatient Sample
CONCLUSIONS: About 1 in 2 uninsured patients admitted for AGB-related complications were at risk of financial toxicity. In addition to surgical risks, providers should consider the potential financial consequences of AGB when counselling patients on their choice of surgery.PMID:37550162 | DOI:10.1016/j.soard.2023.07.002

Examining sex differences in the association between sedentary behavior and cognitive function in bariatric surgery patients
CONCLUSIONS: These results showed that greater SB, independent of LPA, is associated with poorer working memory in women and better set shifting ability in men. Future studies should examine the possibility of domain-specific cognitive effects associated with SB in bariatric surgery samples and clarify possible sex differences.PMID:37482449 | DOI:10.1016/j.soard.2023.06.004

Predictors and outcomes of acute kidney injury after bariatric surgery: analysis of the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program data registry
CONCLUSIONS: New-onset AKI was associated with adverse 30-day outcomes in patients undergoing bariatric surgery. Male sex, venous thromboembolism, hypertension, limited ambulation, and LRYGB were independent predictors of AKI. Prospective studies are needed to better describe these results.PMID:37468336 | DOI:10.1016/j.soard.2023.05.016
