Electroacupuncture for post-stroke overactive bladder: a multi-centre pilot randomized controlled trial.
CONCLUSION: A six-session EA treatment was feasible and appeared to reduce OAB symptoms in post-stroke patients. Further fully powered trials are warranted to confirm the efficacy of EA for those with post-stroke OAB. PMID: 32646228 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Acupuncture treatment and the risk of urinary tract infection in stroke patients: a nationwide matched cohort study.
CONCLUSIONS: In this nationwide retrospective cohort study, we raised the possibility that acupuncture treatment may be associated with a reduced risk of UTI among stroke patients. However, the protective effect associated with acupuncture treatment requires further validation using randomized clinical trials. PMID: 31032620 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Effect of acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine on subacute stroke outcomes: a single-centre randomised controlled trial.
CONCLUSION: This trial, evaluating a treatment protocol commonly used in clinical practice, demonstrates that comprehensive rehabilitation including acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine may comprehensively improve subacute stroke outcomes. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: ChiCTR-TRC-12001972. PMID: 29127079 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Application of survival analysis techniques to determine the optimal number of acupuncture therapy sessions for stroke patients.
CONCLUSION: Stroke patients who were going to improve saw a significant improvement in Barthel index by the 16th acupuncture session and the marginal improvement declined substantially afterward. Our approach required minimal data available from the medical records of a non-academic facility, yet practical implication could be achieved. TRIAL REGISTRATION: The study was retrospectively registered on 18 August 2017 with the Thai Clinical Trials Registry (ref. TCTR20170822002). PMID: 31958974 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Electroacupuncture promotes motor function and functional connectivity in rats with ischemic stroke: an animal resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging study.
CONCLUSION: EA at LI11 and ST36 could enhance the functional connectivity between the left motor cortex and the motor function-related brain regions, including the motor cortex, sensory cortex and striatum, in rats. EA exhibits potential as a treatment for ischemic stroke. PMID: 32576025 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Motor function and fALFF modulation in convalescent-period ischemic stroke patients after scalp acupuncture therapy: a multi-centre randomized controlled trial
CONCLUSION: Scalp acupuncture improved motor function in convalescent-period ischemic stroke patients, and effects were correlated with regulation of motor-relevant brain regions. The fALFF value of the ipsilateral precentral and postcentral gyri could be potential clinical indices for prognostication of motor dysfunction.TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: NCT03120650 (http://www.clinicaltrials.gov).PMID:35673804 | DOI:10.1177/09645284221086289

Functional connectivity of the retrosplenial cortex in rats with ischemic stroke is improved by electroacupuncture.
CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that EA at GV20 and GV24 might improve the learning and memory ability of MICD rats by increasing the functional connectivity between the RSC and hippocampus, cingulate gyrus and midbrain, which is encouraging for the potential treatment for cognitive impairment secondary to ischemia stroke. Effectiveness of dry needling for upper extremity spasticity, quality of life and function in subacute phase stroke patients.
CONCLUSION: The addition of a specific DDN treatment to a standard physiotherapy treatment appeared to lead to a higher reduction in spasticity in the affected arm; however, it did not provide additional changes in functionality, pain and quality of life. Further studies with a randomised controlled trial design are required to confirm our findings. PMID: 32815384 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Does acupuncture combined with antidepressants have a better therapeutic effect on post-stroke depression? A systematic review and meta-analysis.
CONCLUSIONS: Acupuncture combined with antidepressants showed a more favourable effect on the treatment of PSD than antidepressants alone. However, given the limited methodological quality, more high-quality RCTs conducted based on the Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) and Standards for Reporting Interventions in Clinical Trials of Acupuncture (STRICTA) guidelines are necessary. Cost-effectiveness of upper extremity dry needling in the rehabilitation of patients with stroke
DISCUSSION: Cost-effectiveness with responder rate results were favourable for the DN group and were confirmed by the sensitivity analysis according to levels of care. In addition, our findings revealed that 4 weeks of treatment could be more cost-effective than 8 weeks. DN treatment of the upper extremity appears to be cost-effective based on the rate of responders measured using the MMAS scale.PMID:34856821 | DOI:10.1177/09645284211055750
