Comparing the responses of countries and National Health Systems to the COVID-19 pandemic: a critical analysis with a case-report series
Eur Rev Med Pharmacol Sci. 2023 Aug;27(16):7868-7880. doi: 10.26355/eurrev_202308_33442.ABSTRACTThis review aimed to compare the different responses of countries to the pandemic, their National Health Systems, and their impact on citizens' health. This work aimed to create a narrative plot that connects different discussion points and suggests organizational solutions and strategic choices in the face of the pandemic. In particular, this work focused on public health organizations, specifically the European Union and vaccination politics. It is also based on a case report series (about the United States, Germany, Vietnam, ...

Comorbidity and in-hospital mortality in peritoneal dialysis patients: data of the Emilia Romagna region of Italy
CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that in male, elderly hospitalized peritoneal dialysis patients with failing dialysis technique, comorbidity burden should be considered being a predictor of IHM.PMID:37522699 | DOI:10.26355/eurrev_202307_33158

Fresh vs. frozen embryo transfer in assisted reproductive techniques: a single center retrospective cohort study and ethical-legal implications
CONCLUSIONS: Obstetrical outcomes were not statistically different between the two groups; a higher preterm delivery rate was reported in the FET group. ET birth weights were notably lower for singletons compared to the freeze-all strategy. ET patients also had higher LBW rates, with a 2.5-fold higher rate compared to FET. No significant differences were found in cumulative live birth rates between ET and FET, which is consistent with earlier studies. FET protocols are linked to higher neonatal birth weight and lower risk of LBW than fresh ET. The ethical and legal quandaries inherent in such techniques, as technology move...

Lung cancer and COVID-19: problems and perspectives
This report tries to shed light on the issue. We evaluated the great concern of people suffering from lung cancer and also infected with SARS-CoV-2 by discussing evidence and data from current literature. Lung cancer in Italy has represented more than 1 case/4 (27%) in the latest ten years and nevertheless, even due to the concurrence of many complex interplays between COVID-19 and cancer even at the immune level, a consensus protocol and expert guidelines to diagnose and treat lung cancer upon SARS-CoV-2 infection are yet lacking. New insights and consensus panels should be therefore proposed, even at the simplistic level...

Impact of different typologies of smoking on ovarian reserve and oocyte quality in women performing ICSI cycles: an observational prospective study
CONCLUSIONS: Smoking negatively impacts human fertility, leading to a reduction of ovarian reserve and ovarian quality, which can negatively impact results in women performing ICSI cycles. Despite the limitation of the study, our results underline that consumption of cigarette alternative devices seems to have a similar negative impact on the quantity and quality of oocytes retrieved in ICSI cycles. Clinicians should emphasize the reduction of exposure to harmful substances derived from the combustion of tobacco smoking, as well as alternative devices, in women of childbearing age.PMID:37318508 | DOI:10.26355/eurrev_202306_32637

Telehealth in oncofertility and breast cancer patients during COVID-19: preliminary results of insenoallasalute.it project
CONCLUSIONS: In our experience insenoallasalute.it embodied an innovative solution to spread BC awareness, BC screening program, and oncofertility opportunities in the oncological population.PMID:37318507 | DOI:10.26355/eurrev_202306_32652

Melatonin receptor 1A (MTNR1A) gene linkage and association to type 2 diabetes in Italian families
CONCLUSIONS: This is the first study to report MTNR1A as a novel risk gene in T2D. Functional studies are needed to confirm these results.PMID:37259752 | DOI:10.26355/eurrev_202305_32480

Rethink analgo-sedation in digestive endoscopy: the role of scientific societies in tracing training path
CONCLUSIONS: The need to provide patients scheduled for endoscopy procedures with an adequate analgo-sedation is becoming an increasing concern, well-known in almost all countries, but many factors compromise the quality of patient care. Results of a national survey would give strength to the need for a shared GCP in gastrointestinal endoscopy. Training and certification of non-anesthetist professionals should be one of the main ways to center the objective.PMID:37259750 | DOI:10.26355/eurrev_202305_32478

Current status and hotspots evolution in myeloproliferative neoplasm: a bibliometric analysis from 2001 to 2022
CONCLUSIONS: The research is in a stage of rapid development. The collaboration between different institutions or countries (regions) still has room to grow. The hotspot analysis shows that the research of MPN mainly focuses on gene mutation, thrombosis, new drug applications, disease progression, etc.PMID:37259732 | DOI:10.26355/eurrev_202305_32457

New treatment strategies for HIV-positive cancer patients undergoing anticancer medical treatment: update of the literature
Eur Rev Med Pharmacol Sci. 2023 May;27(9):4185-4201. doi: 10.26355/eurrev_202305_32328.ABSTRACTThe introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy (ART) has deeply modified the outcome of HIV patients by improving their overall survival and ameliorating their quality of life (QoL). The prolongation of these patients' survival has led to an increased risk of highly diffused non-infectious diseases, e.g., cardiovascular diseases, endocrine disease, neurological diseases, and cancer. The management of antiretroviral therapy and anticancer agents (AC) can be challenging, due to the possible drug-drug interactions (DDI) be...

Occipital site deactivation for the treatment of chronic migraine: a minimally invasive approach
Eur Rev Med Pharmacol Sci. 2023 May;27(9):4065-4068. doi: 10.26355/eurrev_202305_32313.ABSTRACTIn this paper, we describe our experience in treating migraine headache localized in the occipital area. Using our minimally-invasive approach, from June 2011 till January 2022, we have performed MH decompression surgery over 232 patients with occipital migraine trigger site. After a mean follow-up of 20 months (range, 3-62 months), patients complaining for occipital MH had 94% positive surgical outcome (86% complete MH elimination). Only rare minor complications were reported (e.g., oedema, paresthesia, ecchymosis, and numbness)...
