The associations of stroke, transient ischemic attack, and/or stroke-related recurrent vascular events with Lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Conclusions:In patients with TIA and first ischemic stroke, elevated Lp-PLA2 activity levels were associated with recurrent vascular events. And in the general population elevated Lp-PLA2 levels were associated with the risk of stroke, although the association between Lp-PLA2 activity levels and the risk of stroke was less profound compared with the corresponding association of stroke risk with the Lp-PLA2 mass levels. Background: Studies on stroke and lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2) have produced conflicting results. Objective: The aim of the study was to assess the associations of Lp-PLA2 levels ...

Urban-rural differences in risk factors for ischemic stroke in northern China
This study aims to investigate urban-rural differences in characteristics and risk factors of ischemic stroke in northern China. The present cross-sectional study was based on the High-risk Population Screening and Intervention Project for Stroke. The cluster sampling method was used to select urban and rural screening sites in northern China. By collecting information and screening the data, patients with ischemic stroke were obtained and a control group with similar gender, age, and regional distribution was selected among the nonischemic stroke patients. Then, the demographic and risk factors of patients with ischemic ...

Genetic polymorphisms of methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase C677T and risk of ischemic stroke in a southern Chinese Hakka population
In this study, a total of 1967 ischemic stroke patients and 2565 controls of Chinese Hakka ethnicity were recruited. The MTHFR C677T polymorphisms were genotyped by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification and microarray method. The risk of ischemic stroke was estimated by logistic regression analysis. The frequencies of CC, CT, and TT genotypes were 52.67% versus 55.63%, 40.31% versus 38.52%, and 7.02% versus 5.85% in patients with ischemic stroke versus controls, respectively. The frequency of T allele was significantly higher in ischemic stroke patients (27.17%) than in controls (25.11%) (P = .026, odds ratio [...

The risk of stroke and associated risk factors in a health examination population: A cross-sectional study
This study estimates the risk of stroke and identify risk factors for people who underwent health examinations at the Health Examination Center at West China Hospital, Sichuan University from July 2014 to February 2018. A total of 31,464 people were recruited in this study and divided into 3 groups (low risk, moderate risk, and high risk) according to risk of stroke. We explored possible factors associated with the risk of stroke by using multivariable stepwise logistic regression analysis. Among the participants, 17,959 were at low risk, 11,825 were at moderate risk, and 1680 were at high risk. Age, smoking, alcohol con...

Risk factors for and impact of poststroke pneumonia in patients with acute ischemic stroke
Poststroke pneumonia (PSP) is a common complication of stroke and an important cause of death following stroke. However, the treatment of PSP remains inadequate due to severe impairment to the respiratory system by PSP. Thus, it is crucial to focus on preventing PSP to improve the prognosis of patients with stroke. This prospective single-center Cohort study aimed to investigate the risk factors for pulmonary infection following an ischemic stroke and identify whether PSP significantly influences the prognosis of patients after stroke. Altogether, 451 patients who were treated for acute ischemic stroke in the First A...

Clinical efficacy and imaging evaluation of recombinant tissue plasminogen activator thrombolytic therapy in patients with wake up stroke: A randomized controlled trial
This study will be a single-blinded, randomized controlled trial with 2 parallel groups. It will be conducted at North China University of science and technology affiliated hospital. Discussion: There is no consistent conclusion about the pathogenesis of wake up stroke. Wake up stroke is more likely to manifest as small vessel disease. The incidence of wake up stroke patients is relatively high, and the effectiveness and safety of intravenous thrombolysis under the guidance of multimode imaging therapy in wake up stroke need to be further explored by prospective, large-scale studies. Trial registration: ClinicalTrial...

Risk factors for stroke in a population of central China: A cross-sectional study
This study sought to investigate and analyze the distribution of stroke population and the main risk factors for stroke occurrence in a Chinese population, and to predict the probability of stroke occurrence in high-risk groups with risk factors, so as to provide a scientific basis for the comprehensive prevention and treatment of stroke. A whole-group sampling method was used to investigate 1009 participants in Jingzhou city in central China, and a uniform questionnaire survey and related medical examinations were conducted. The risk factors for stroke in the area were analyzed by univariate analysis, and a multifactorial...

Association of smoking with risk of stroke in middle-aged and older Chinese: Evidence from the China National Stroke Prevention Project
This study aimed to investigate the association between smoking and risk of stroke in middle-aged and older Chinese adults, based on the data from the China National Stroke Prevention Project. A community-based cross-sectional study with 12,704 (5681 men, 7023 women) Chinese adults aged ≥40 years was conducted to examine the association of smoking with stroke. Multivariable logistic regression was used to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Among the study population, a total of 524 stroke survivors were identified. The age-adjusted prevalence of stroke was 4.06% for both sexes, 2.95% for wo...

The population attributable risk and clustering of stroke risk factors in different economical regions of China
The greatest regional variation in stroke prevalence exists in China. However, whether there are differences in population attributable risk (PAR) and clustering of stroke risk factors among regions resulting in stroke geographic variation is unclear. We conducted face-to-face surveys of residents of 14 provinces from September 2016 to May 2017 who participated in the Chinese Stroke Screening and Prevention Project. We compared the specific PAR values of eight risk factors and the different cluster rates and patterns in China. A total of 84,751partipants were included. Eight factors accounted for 70% to 80% of the PAR of...

Therapeutic effect of Chinese herbal medicines for post stroke recovery: A traditional and network meta-analysis
Background: Stroke is a condition with high morbidity and mortality, and 75% of stroke survivors lose their ability to work. Stroke is a burden to the family and society. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of Chinese herbal patent medicines in the treatment of patients after the acute phase of a stroke. Methods: We searched the following databases through August 2016: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane library, China Knowledge Resource Integrated Database (CNKI), China Science Periodical Database (CSPD), and China Biology Medicine disc (CBMdisc) for studies that evaluated Chinese herbal patent medicines...

Matrix metalloproteinase-2 gene polymorphisms are associated with ischemic stroke in a Hainan population
This study investigated the relationship between MMP-2 and stroke risk in the Southern Chinese population. We evaluated single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) of MMP-2 in stroke patients in an association study using a case-control design. Six SNPs of MMP2 were selected and genotyped by Agena MassARRAY. SNPStats, Haploview was used to analyze genetic data. Two SNPs in the MMP-2 gene were significantly associated with stroke risk. For rs1132896 (C versus G allele), the C allele was significantly reduced stroke risk (OR = 0.56, 95% confidence intervals [95% CI] = 0.39–0.81, P = .002). The effect of the T alle...
