Clinical characteristics of SARS-CoV-2 vaccine-related acute appendicitis
CONCLUSION: With the exception of older age, the clinical characteristics of patients presenting with acute appendicitis within 21 days of receiving the SARS-CoV-2 vaccination did not differ from those of patients who presented with acute appendicitis not related to the vaccination. This finding suggests that vaccine-related acute appendicitis is similar to "classic" acute appendicitis.PMID:37225246 | PMC:PMC10228661 | DOI:10.1503/cjs.009322

"I Want People to Be Able to Make an Informed Choice": How Quebec naturopaths discuss vaccination in their practice
Vaccine. 2023 May 18:S0264-410X(23)00553-4. doi: 10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.05.026. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHealth care providers' recommendations can play an important role in individuals' vaccination decisions. Despite being one of the most popular complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), naturopathy is understudied in relation to vaccination decisions. We sought to address this gap through this study of vaccination perspectives of naturopathy practitioners in the province of Quebec, Canada. We conducted in-depth interviews with 30 naturopaths. Thematic analysis was conducted. Main themes were developed deductivel...

Inclusion of intersectionality in studies of immunization uptake in Canada: A scoping review
CONCLUSIONS: Based on our findings, there is an evident lack of intersectionality framework utilization in immunization coverage research in Canada, as well as misuse of the terms "gender" and "sex". Rather than only focusing on discrete characteristics, research should explore the interaction between numerous characteristics to better understand the barriers to immunization uptake in Canada.PMID:37202274 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.04.073

Herpes zoster ophthalmicus: frequency and risk factors for developing uncommon ocular manifestations
CONCLUSIONS: The overall frequency of HZO from 2004 to 2021 was 4.2% and has increased annually since 2012. Uncommon ocular manifestations of PCR-verified HZO, mostly comprised of ARN, were more likely to occur in immunosuppressed patients.PMID:37192736 | DOI:10.1016/j.jcjo.2023.04.011

The persistence of seroprotective levels of antibodies after vaccination with PreHevbrio, a 3-antigen hepatitis B vaccine
This study evaluated antibody persistence in a subset of fully vaccinated and seroprotected (anti-HBs ≥ 10 mIU/mL) Finnish participants from the phase 3 trial (PROTECT) of 3A-HBV versus single-antigen HBV vaccine (1A-HBV). 465/528 eligible subjects were enrolled (3A-HBV: 244; 1A-HBV: 221). Baseline characteristics were balanced. After 2.5 years, more 3A-HBV subjects remained seroprotected (88.1 % [95 %CI: 84.1,92.2]) versus 1A-HBV (72.4 % [95 %CI: 66.6,78.3)], p < 0.0001) and had higher mean anti-HBs [1382.9 mIU/mL (95 %CI: 1013.8,1751.9) versus 252.6 mIU/mL (95 %CI: 127.5,377.6), p < 0.0001]. In multiple variable ...
