What Surgical Skills Rural Surgeons Need to Master
Conclusions: Our results demonstrated that surgeons practicing in rural areas have a strong interest in acquiring additional skills in a variety of general and subspecialty surgical procedures. The information obtained in this study may be used to guide curriculum development of further postgraduate skills courses targeted to rural surgeons.

Assessment tool for total laparoscopic hysterectomy: a delphi consensus survey among international experts.
CONCLUSION:  Using a Delphi methodology, we achieved international consensus among experts in laparoscopic gynaecology within a short time frame and with minimal costs. The resulting evaluation tool for total laparoscopic hysterectomy may serve in the assessment of surgical skills in the future, and would be a valuable adjunct to postgraduate training and continuing medical education programs. This tool will now undergo a validation process, comparing the rating scores of novices and experts surgeons. Development and evaluation of a simulation-based CME course: beyond lectures and credit-hours
Conclusions Simulation-based CME courses provide hands-on experiences that can positively affect clinical practice. While our data appears to show a significant mis-match between clinical skill and simulator difficulty, these findings also underscore significant learning needs in the surgical community.

Live surgery courses. Restrospective safety analysis after 11 editions
Live surgery is a topic of interest at every meeting or course in the field of surgery. The potential of laparoscopy for live broadcasting makes it an excellent tool in continuing medical education. Surgeons who participate in live surgeries are usually experienced, but several conditions may influence the results and safety of a procedure.

Live surgery courses: retrospective safety analysis after 11 editions.
DISCUSSION: We found higher morbidity and reoperation rates. The conversion rate in long-term follow-up was higher. Despite the educational benefits, we should take into consideration the higher risk to our patients for future editions. PMID: 29519662 [PubMed - in process]

Construction and Validation of a Low-Cost Laparoscopic Simulator for Surgical Education
Abstract: Introduction: To construct a trainer that would achieve the equivalent goals of the Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS) trainer at an economical cost. A validation study comparing our homemade (HM) trainer vs the FLS trainer was performed. A literature search as well as a price comparison with other commercially available laparoscopic trainers is presented. Methods: The HM laparoscopic trainer was constructed using a prefabricated hard plastic frame with a vinyl plastic sheet affixed as the roof. A row of light-emitting diode lights and a charge-coupled device camera were mounted on the inside roof of the f...
