Platelet-activating factor nasal challenge induces nasal congestion and reduces nasal volume in both healthy volunteers and allergic rhinitis patients.
CONCLUSION: This is the first description of PAF effects on human nasal mucosa using a cumulative dose schedule and evaluated by both nasal symptoms and AcR. Nasal provocation with PAF showed long-lasting effects on nasal symptoms and nasal obstruction in HVs and in patients with SAR. Nasal challenge may be a useful tool to investigate the role of PAF in AR and the potential role of anti-PAF drugs. PMID: 23562190 [PubMed - in process]

Nasal septal perforation repair using intranasal rotation and advancement flaps.
CONCLUSION: Combined use of intranasal advancement and rotation flaps is a safe and promising option for surgical repair of moderate to large septal perforation. Bilateral tension-free mucosal closure with an interposition graft is important for the surgical success. PMID: 23562189 [PubMed - in process]

Comparative study of morphological and histological changes between differently structured expanded polytetrafluoroethylene implants in an animal model.
CONCLUSION: First developed e-PTFE should be carefully trimmed in augmentation because of its potential to decrease in size over time, whereas new e-PTFEis more likely to show migration and instability. PMID: 23562151 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Ergonomic considerations in endoscopic sinus surgery: Lessons learned from laparoscopic surgeons.
CONCLUSION: Increasing surgeon awareness will allow for many basic ergonomic principles to be applied to endoscopic sinus and skull base surgery. Although many simple changes can be immediately made, there is a clear need for further study and abundant room for innovation. PMID: 23710962 [PubMed - in process]

The characteristics and new treatment paradigm of dental implant-related chronic rhinosinusitis.
CONCLUSION: In patients with DIrCRS, ESS can be used as the first surgical choice with good prognosis and low morbidity. Although most cases of DIrCRS are caused by dental implants penetrating into the maxillary sinus, the dental implants can be preserved unless there is severe periimplantitis or recurrence of sinusitis. Nonetheless, the sinus mucosa above the dental implants must be kept intact during ESS. PMID: 23710961 [PubMed - in process]

The potential role of hyaluronic acid in postoperative radiofrequency surgery for chronic inferior turbinate hypertrophy.
CONCLUSION: The results of this prospective study suggest a role of HA as a supportive treatment for faster improvement of nasal respiration, also minimizing patients' discomfort in postoperative nasal surgery, promoting nasal mucosa healing in postoperative RFVTR for inferior turbinate hypertrophy. Sinus surgery and delivery method influence the effectiveness of topical corticosteroids for chronic rhinosinusitis: Systematic review and meta-analysis.
CONCLUSION: INCS is effective for CRS. Prior sinus surgery and direct sinus delivery enhance the effectiveness of INCS in CRS. PMID: 23710959 [PubMed - in process]

The role of the nose in sleep-disordered breathing.
CONCLUSION: Nasal obstruction plays a modulating, but not causative, role in SDB. Nasal interventions may improve subjective aspects of snoring and OSA but do not improve objective indicators of disease. Standardization of methods and higher evidence level studies will further clarify the benefit of nasal interventions in the treatment of SDB. PMID: 23710958 [PubMed - in process]

Immunotherapy of allergic rhinitis: New therapeutic opportunities with virus-like particles filled with CpG motifs.
CONCLUSION: Results encourage further investigations of VLPs and CpG motifs as adjuncts to or even alternative candidates for immunotherapy of allergic disorders. PMID: 23710957 [PubMed - in process]

Incidental sinonasal findings identified during preoperative evaluation for endoscopic transsphenoidal approaches.
CONCLUSION: This is one of the larger reviews of patients undergoing eTSA for sellar lesions and the only study that describes how intraoperative management may be altered by preoperative sinonasal evaluation. We found a significant incidence of sinonasal pathology and anatomic variants that altered routine operative planning; therefore, a thorough sinonasal evaluation is warranted in these cases.
