Association of joint space narrowing with impairment of physical function and work ability in patients with early rheumatoid arthritis: protection beyond disease control by adalimumab plus methotrexate
Conclusions ADA+MTX inhibited both JE and JSN progression independently of disease activity. JSN played a more prominent role in patient-reported outcomes than JE. Preventing the onset or worsening of JSN probably represents a critical aspect of effective disease management of early rheumatoid arthritis patients.

An Overlooked Cause of Cough in Children: Foreign Body Aspiration
An 18-month-old female infant was referred to the pediatric allergy clinic with a suspicion of asthma due to difficulty in breathing, cough, and wheezing of 3 months’ duration. History revealed no symptom-free period and only a partial relief despite trials of several antibiotic and inhaled bronchodilator and corticosteroid treatments. There was no history of consanguinity or failure to thrive, and the caregivers denied any abnormal events, including choking. On physical examination, the infant’s body temperature was 98°F, and oxygen saturation was 93%, whereas the heart rate and respiratory rate were 124 and 54 brea...

Soft and Hard Tissue Response to Zirconia versus Titanium One‐Piece Implants Placed in Alveolar and Palatal Sites: A Randomized Control Trial
ConclusionsAlthough the failure rates with the one‐piece Zr implants were higher than with the Ti ones, suggesting that the former's clinical usage as in this study cannot be recommended, it should be borne in mind that the fault may also lie with the novel prosthodontic design which was used.

Efficacy of certolizumab pegol on signs and symptoms of axial spondyloarthritis including ankylosing spondylitis: 24-week results of a double-blind randomised placebo-controlled Phase 3 study
Conclusions CZP rapidly reduced the signs and symptoms of axSpA, with no new safety signals observed compared to the safety profile of CZP in RA. Similar improvements were observed across CZP dosing regimens, and in AS and nr-axSpA patients.

Remission induction comparing infliximab and high-dose intravenous steroid, followed by treat-to-target: a double-blind, randomised, controlled trial in new-onset, treatment-naive, rheumatoid arthritis (the IDEA study)
Conclusions In DMARD-naive early RA patients, initial therapy with MTX+high-dose intravenous steroid resulted in good disease control with little structural damage. MTX+IFX was not statistically superior to MTX+intravenous steroid when combined with a treat-to-target approach.

Head-to-head comparison of subcutaneous abatacept versus adalimumab for rheumatoid arthritis: two-year efficacy and safety findings from AMPLE trial
Conclusions Through 2 years of blinded treatment in this first head-to-head study between biologic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs in RA patients with an inadequate response to MTX, subcutaneous abatacept and adalimumab were similarly efficacious based on clinical, functional and radiographic outcomes. Overall, AE frequency was similar in both groups but there were less discontinuations due to AEs, SAEs, serious infections and fewer local ISRs with abatacept. ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier NCT00929864.

Should I send my patient with previous giant cell arteritis for imaging of the thoracic aorta? A systematic literature review and meta-analysis
Conclusions The data support an association between GCA and TAA/TAD compared with age-matched controls, but the true relative risk, and the time course of that risk, remains unclear. It is also unclear whether chest radiography is a sufficiently sensitive screening tool. Clinicians should retain a high index of suspicion for aortic pathology in patients with GCA. Before ordering imaging, clinicians should consider whether, and how, detecting aortic pathology would affect a patient's management.

Treating axial and peripheral spondyloarthritis, including psoriatic arthritis, to target: results of a systematic literature search to support an international treat-to-target recommendation in spondyloarthritis
Conclusions There is a need for randomised trials that investigate the value of treat-to-target recommendations in SpA and psoriasis. Several trials have used thresholds of disease activity measures to guide treatment decisions. However, evidence on the effect of these data on long-term outcome is scarce. The search data informed the expert committee regarding the formulation of recommendations and a research agenda.

Comorbidity influenced health-related quality of life of 390 patients with idiopathic scoliosis at long-term follow-up.
Conclusion: About one-third of middle aged patients with idiopathic scoliosis reported to have at least one comorbid condition. Results indicate that comorbidity influences health related quality of life. Clinical Rehabilitation Impact: Comorbidity should be considered when interpreting scores of health-related quality of life in patients with idiopathic scoliosis. Chronological reading of radiographs in rheumatoid arthritis increases efficiency and does not lead to bias
Conclusions Chronological reading of radiographs is preferred above random reading, due to decreased variability around the estimation of the progression rate; this increased efficiency translates into smaller sample sizes, or increased power to detect small differences. For studies with long-term follow-up, the same two readers should read all radiographs, including baseline.

Five-year outcomes of probable rheumatoid arthritis treated with methotrexate or placebo during the first year (the PROMPT study)
Conclusions After 5 years there is no lasting benefit of a 1 year initial course of MTX for patients with undifferentiated arthritis, compared with initial placebo. Progression to classifiable RA was not suppressed, drug-free remission not induced and the progression of radiological damage was similar in both groups. Reclassification at baseline with the 2010 criteria showed that 25% of patients with RA (2010) achieved spontaneous drug-free remission.

Long-term outcome of Rheumatoid Arthritis defined according to the 2010-classification criteria
Conclusions ‘2010 RA’ has a milder disease course than ‘1987 RA’. This may have important implications for basic scientific studies and clinical trials in RA.

Efficacy of biological disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs: a systematic literature review informing the 2013 update of the EULAR recommendations for the management of rheumatoid arthritis
Conclusions The systematic literature review confirms efficacy of biological DMARDs in RA. It addresses different treatment strategies with the potential for reduction in therapy, particularly with early disease control, and highlights emerging therapies.
