Sinus procedures in the Medicare population from 2000 to 2014: A recent balloon sinuplasty explosion
ConclusionAlthough the total number of sinus procedures increased from 2000 to 2014, the number of BSP increased at a substantially greater rate since the introduction of CPT codes for these procedures in 2011. Nationwide increases in sinus providers were driven by new providers performing balloon‐guided procedures. Level of Evidence4. Laryngoscope, 2017

Combined endonasal and eyelid approach for management of extensive frontal sinus inverting papilloma
ConclusionCombining a transpalpebral orbitofrontal craniotomy with the endonasal approach allows complete resection of invasive IP with extension into the frontal sinus. This is achieved with great cosmetic results. Level of Evidence4. Laryngoscope, 2017

Investigating hyperventilation syndrome in patients suffering from empty nose syndrome
ConclusionsThis study suggests that HVS is frequent in patients with ENS, and that symptoms can be improved by respiratory rehabilitation. Pathophysiological links between ENS and HVS deserve to be further explored. Level of Evidence2b Laryngoscope, 2017

Middle meatal packing in endoscopic sinus surgery —to pack or not to pack?—a decision‐analysis model
ConclusionOur decision‐analysis model indicates that middle meatal packing is not advantageous for patients undergoing ESS. Absorbable packing materials have a less adverse effect on quality of life than nonabsorbable materials. Level of Evidence1a. Laryngoscope, 2016

Exosomes mediate interepithelial transfer of functional P ‐glycoprotein in chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps
ConclusionHere we demonstrate the presence and P‐gp enrichment of mucus‐derived exosomes, or rhinosomes, in CRSwNP. These rhinosomes are capable of rapid intercellular transfer of P‐gp, leading to increased P‐gp function within recipient cells. This represents a novel mechanism for maintaining P‐gp overexpression in CRSwNP, and more generally for interepithelial transfer of other proteins between mucosal epithelial cells. How does radioactive iodine affect the nose?
ConclusionsRAI treatment can adversely affect the nasal mucosa. Nasal dryness and obstruction can occur immediately after RAI treatment. Additional research is warranted to further elucidate the effects of RAI treatment on nasal function. Level of Evidence4. Laryngoscope, 2017

Safe treatment of ethmoid sinusitis utilizing minimally invasive ethmoid punch sinusotomy in chronic rhinosinusitis without polyposis patients
ConclusionsThis feasibility study demonstrates that EPS appears to be a safe, minimally invasive procedure to treat ethmoid sinusitis in CRSsNP patients unresponsive to medical therapy that establishes ethmoid ventilation, and likely improves effective sinus irrigation. Conducting a clinical trial would be appropriate in assessing a potential role for EPS in the management of this condition. Level of Evidence4. Laryngoscope, 127:1268–1275, 2017

Validation and cross ‐cultural adaptation of the arabic version of the nasal obstruction symptom evaluation scale
ConclusionsThe A‐NOSE scale is a valid instrument for evaluating the subjective severity of nasal obstruction and is recommended to be used in rhinology research and daily practice. Level of Evidence3b Laryngoscope, 2017

Impact of liver disease on outcomes of patients hospitalized for epistaxis
ConclusionAmong patients hospitalized for epistaxis, LD resulted in greater morbidity and mortality. Clinicians should be aware of the particular risk that LD bears on the hospitalized epistaxis patient. Level of Evidence2C. Laryngoscope, 2017

Postinfectious olfactory loss: A retrospective study on 791 patients
ConclusionsThis study provides new evidence within the postinfectious olfactory loss literature, shedding light on the prognostic factors and showing that recovery of olfactory function is very frequent, even many years after the infection. Level of Evidence4 Laryngoscope, 2017

Smoking and olfactory dysfunction: A systematic literature review and meta ‐analysis
ConclusionsCurrent smoking, but not former smoking, is associated with significantly increased risk of olfactory dysfunction, suggesting that the effects of smoking on olfaction may be reversible. Future studies that prospectively evaluate the impact of smoking cessation on improvement in olfactory function are warranted. Level of EvidenceN/A. Laryngoscope, 2017

What drives productivity loss in chronic rhinosinusitis? A SNOT ‐22 subdomain analysis
ConclusionsImpairments in sleep and psychological SNOT‐22 domains correlate with productivity losses. Patients with comorbid immunodeficiency, smoking, and steroid dependency had higher than average productivity losses. Targeted management of psychological and sleep dysfunction in combination with standard symptom control may improve patient‐centered care and reduce the annual economic burden of CRS. Osteonecrosis after intranasal injection with bevacizumab in treating hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia: A case report
Intranasal bevacizumab injections have been used in treating hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT)‐related epistaxis since 2009. It is believed to be a safe and effective treatment for a selected group of HHT patients in reducing frequency and intensity of epistaxis, with few or none adverse effects. In this case report, however, we will describe a patient who developed bilateral osteonecrosis in the knees while undergoing regular intranasal submucosal bevacizumab injections. Although osteonecrosis previously has been documented in patients receiving bevacizumab intravenously in oncologic doses, thus far it has not...

Impact of obstructive sleep apnea in transsphenoidal pituitary surgery: An analysis of inpatient data
ConclusionsIn patients who underwent transsphenoidal pituitary surgery, OSA was associated with higher rates of certain pulmonary and airway complications. OSA was not associated with increased non–pulmonary/airway complications or inpatient mortality, despite older average age and higher comorbidity rates. Level of Evidence2C Laryngoscope, 2017

Role of fungi in chronic rhinosinusitis through ITS sequencing
ConclusionFungal biomass estimated through ITS amplicon concentration correlated with traditional fungal detection techniques and CT double densities. Our results suggest that fungal dysbiosis only occurs in the sinuses of a selected subset of patients, and therefore could not be a universal determinant of sinus disease pathogenesis in all CRS patients.
