Spreader flaps do not change early functional outcomes in reduction rhinoplasty: A randomized control trial.
CONCLUSION: Spreader flap is an attractive technique in preserving the middle vault in nasal plastic surgery. However, its effect needs more evaluation. PMID: 24717890 [PubMed - in process]

A radiological analysis of inferior turbinate in patients with deviated nasal septum by using computed tomography.
CONCLUSION: The compensatory hypertrophy of inferior turbinates in patients with nasal septum deviation is not only caused by mucosal hypertrophy, but also by hypertrophy of the inferior turbinate bone itself. The assistance of preoperative CT before septoplasty can be useful when deciding on the surgical technique to fix turbinate. PMID: 24717889 [PubMed - in process]

Upper lateral strut graft: A technique to improve the internal nasal valve.
CONCLUSION: The upper lateral strut graft improved patency of cadaveric INVs, with statistically significant increases in the MCA most notable when placed for narrow INVs. PMID: 24717888 [PubMed - in process]

Evaluation of polyvinylidene fluoride nasal sensor to assess deviated nasal septum in comparision with peak nasal inspiratory flow measurements.
CONCLUSION: The result shows that PVDF measurements closely agree with PNIF findings. Developed PVDF nasal sensor is an objective method that is simple, inexpensive, fast, and portable for determining DNS in clinical practice. PMID: 24717887 [PubMed - in process]

The link between rhinitis and rapid-eye-movement sleep breathing disturbances in children with obstructive sleep apnea.
CONCLUSION: Rhinitis is highly prevalent in children with OSA. Although OSA is not more severe in children with rhinitis, they do have a distinct OSA phenotype characterized by more REM-related OSA. Further research is needed to delineate the link between REM-sleep and the physiology of the nose during health and disease. PMID: 24717885 [PubMed - in process]

Life-threatening angioedema induced by angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors: Characteristics and risk factors.
CONCLUSION: The high recurrence rate of ACEI-induced angioedema preceding subsequent life-threatening events suggests underdiagnosis of this potentially fatal adverse reaction. Diabetes and probably obesity are risk factors for more severe events. Physicians following patients receiving ACEI should be more aware of possible shortcomings associated with these medications. PMID: 24717884 [PubMed - in process]

Clinical control in the dual diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and rhinitis: A prospective analysis.
CONCLUSION: Our study showed a statistically significant positive correlation between clinical control of rhinitis symptoms and clinical control of OSAS. This study emphasizes the importance of achieving concurrent optimal control of both OSAS and AR/NAR. PMID: 24717883 [PubMed - in process]

Influenza vaccinations and chemosensory function.
CONCLUSION: A very small percentage of the 4554 patients evaluated (0.19%) attributed their chemosensory dysfunction to a prior influenza vaccination. No influences of the number of lifetime influenza vaccinations on the test scores were evident in the subset of 925 patients whose dysfunction was due to other causes. Smell and taste in patients with vascular malformation of the extracranial head and neck region.
CONCLUSION: Patients exhibit significantly reduced olfactory and gustatory function even when the nose and/or tongue are not malformed. Patients should be tested with validated smell and taste tests to adequately inform and advise them about overcoming smell and taste deficits. PMID: 24717881 [PubMed - in process]

Schwannomas of the sinonasal tract and anterior skull base: A systematic review of 94 cases.
CONCLUSION: ASB and sinonasal schwannomas are rare lesions and should be considered in the differential diagnosis of ASB masses involving the cribriform plate with sinonasal extension. Gross total resection of these lesions should be considered the goal of operative management. PMID: 24717879 [PubMed - in process]

The immunoexpression of CD34, Bcl-2, and Ki-67 antigens in sinonasal inverted papillomas.
CONCLUSION: Our findings underscore importance of angiogenesis in the development and prognosis of IP and support further investigation of this aspect of IP tumor growth. PMID: 24717877 [PubMed - in process]

Topical anti-infective sinonasal irrigations: Update and literature review.
CONCLUSION: Topical anti-infective solutions are not recommended as first-line therapy for routine CRS but may be considered as a potential option for patients with refractory CRS who have failed traditional medical and surgical intervention. Additional research is necessary to determine which patient populations would derive the most benefit from each respective irrigation regimen and identify potential toxicities associated with prolonged use. Staphylococcus enterotoxin A induces MUC5B expression via Toll-like receptor 2, extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2, and p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase in human airway epithelial cells.
CONCLUSION: These results show for the first time that SEA induces MUC5B expression via TLR2, ERK1/2, and p38 MAPK signaling pathway in human airway epithelial cells. PMID: 24717875 [PubMed - in process]

Regional and socioeconomic disparities in emergency department use of radiographic imaging for acute pediatric sinusitis.
CONCLUSION: The use of ED imaging in APS is appropriately associated with factors known to be associated with APS complications. However, additional disparities with respect to regional and socioeconomic factors exist. Interventions to eliminate these health care disparities in use of imaging resources may lead to quality improvement in care and outcomes for APS. PMID: 24717874 [PubMed - in process]
