Successful mRNA COVID-19 Vaccination and Colonoscopy After Oral Desensitization in a Patient With Polyethylene Glycol Allergy
We report a 55-year-old woman's history as a case of successful mRNA COVID-19 vaccination and colonoscopy after oral desensitization to PEG in a patient with PEG allergy who required both COVID-19 vaccination and colon evaluation. Allergy to PEG was diagnosed based on clinical history, skin test results, and basophil histamine release testing. Oral desensitization effectively suppressed histamine release from basophils in response to PEG stimulation, suggesting that oral desensitization using PEG-based laxatives may be an effective treatment option for patients with allergy to the substance.PMID:35971765 | DOI:10.3346/jkms.2022.37.e251

Clinical Characteristics of COVID-19: Use of Steroids in Mostly Unvaccinated COVID-19 Patients Before the Omicron Variant
CONCLUSION: The dose and duration of steroids were in line with current guidelines in 82.5% of COVID-19 patients, but the outliers may need tailored therapy according to surrogate markers, such as initial lymphopenia or high level of LDH.PMID:35880504 | PMC:PMC9313976 | DOI:10.3346/jkms.2022.37.e228

Hypersensitivity to polyethylene glycol in adults and children: An emerging challenge
Acta Biomed. 2021 Nov 29;92(S7):e2021519. doi: 10.23750/abm.v92iS7.12384.ABSTRACTHypersensitivity reactions to polyethylene glycol (PEG) is an emerging challenge and the interest about this disease is growing since PEG is considered one of the possible causes of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID 19) vaccine-associated anaphylaxis. PEG is used in a wide variety of pharmaceutical, medical, industrial, cosmetic, and food products and can be an active ingredient or used as an excipient. PEG is present in several medications, and it may or may not be present in different formulations and dosages of the same drug. Lack of standard...

Allergy and COVID-19
Acta Biomed. 2021 Nov 29;92(S7):e2021522. doi: 10.23750/abm.v92iS7.12402.ABSTRACTThe first cases of as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection have been reported in Wuhan, China in December 2019. The World Health Organization declared the global pandemic in March 2020. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) showed high rates of mortality in the adult population, whereas a mild course was observed in childhood. Allergic diseases, characterized by a type-2 polarization of the immune system, were considered one of the major risk factor of severe COVID-19. Large amounts of clinical data and expert o...
