Penicillium marneffei is a pathogenic fungus endemic in Southeast Asia. P marneffei was an extremely rare pathogen in humans before the HIV epidemic, but following the exponential rise in the prevalence of HIV in Southeast Asia, penicilliosis emerged as a clinically significant opportunistic infection and is classified as an AIDS-defining illness.
