A total cost perspective of type 1 and 2 diabetes mellitus in two South African medical schemes servicing the public healthcare sector

Corporal punishment in the home: Is there a legal duty on the medical doctor to report it?
This article examines what this judgment means for medical doctors who reasonably suspect that a child has been the victim of corporal punishment. It is argued that medical doctors have a duty to report such incidents in terms of section 110(1) of the Children's Act 38 of 2005.PMID:34382543 | DOI:10.7196/SAMJ.2021.v111i7.15528

Antimicrobial prescribing in the surgical and medical wards at a private hospital in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, 2019
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that compliance with evidence-based guidelines for the use of antimicrobials is not optimal in hospitals in the private sector. Antimicrobials are prescribed inappropriately for empirical treatment and for surgical prophylaxis. Private hospital groups should consider adopting antimicrobial prescribing guidelines that are mandatory for doctors to adhere to in order to promote rational antimicrobial prescribing, and thereby reduce the burden of antimicrobial resistance.PMID:34382571 | DOI:10.7196/SAMJ.2021.v111i6.15403
