Farm dust extract increases the epithelial barrier function of bronchial epithelial cells
In this study, the effect of farm dust extracts (FDE) on barrier function and repair was investigated in primary bronchial epithelial cells (PBECs). Epithelial barrier function was analysed by assessing resistance (electric cell substrate impedance sensing and Trans Epithelial Electric Resistance (TEER)) and permeability (FITC-Dextran flux). FDE exposure induced a dose-dependent two-fold increase in barrier resistance and up to 70% reduction in permeability. An approximately 1.5-fold increased mRNA expression of occludin-1 and ZO-1 was observed after 24 hours of FDE exposure. Exposure of fully differentiated PBEC cultures ...

Gamma globulin (Ig) replacement- a potential treatment in uncontrolled asthma associated with humoral immunodeficiency (huID)?
We report 5 adult cases of the rare association asthma-huID. All patients had persistent uncontrolled asthma related to recurrent sino-pulmonary infections and improved symptoms following Ig supplementation. All patients were confirmed asthma according to GINA guidelines, and bronchiectasis was excluded by chest CT scan. Two men (28 and 60-years-old) with pollens allergies, chronic rhinosinusitis, Ig G deficiency (7.8 g/l, and 7.6 g/l) despite optimal therapy had uncontrolled asthma due to recurrent sino-pulmonary infections. Both underwent surgery for nasal polyposis, but relapsed with acute sinusitis and severe asthma exac...

Birth weight, lung function testing in school aged children from rural and urban areas
Conclusions: In our stady there was no statisticaly signifficant correlation between birth weight and childrens' lung function, there was no signifficant correlation between number of children in family and lung function. No difference was found between children in urban and rural area following this criteria.

Obstructive diseases - Epidemiology and public awareness of the causes, course and effects. Selected results of the Polish Spirometry Day 2013 and World Spirometry Day 2014
Conclusion: Due to the low awareness on chronic respiratory diseases and their relationship with smoking and quality of the environment, such screening tests and promotion of appropriate knowledge are of great importance. Otherwise significant part of the Polish population will still be unknowingly living with obstructive disease.

Burden of asthma among children in a developing megacity: Childhood asthma study, Pakistan
Conclusion: This study is the first robust evidence regarding asthma among children in Pakistan, reporting a high burden in this group. Family history, male gender, Sindhi ethnicity and ill-ventilated kitchen were identified as important predictors of asthma. Targeted preventive measures and further intervention studies are required to better understand and reduce the burden of asthma among children in Pakistan.

Rhinitis and chronic rhinosinusitis in Melbourne, Australia
Conclusions: Rhinitis remains very prevalent in Australia, but symptom-based CRS has a low prevalence. CRS may be over-diagnosed by doctors or CRS symptoms may have remitted in some subjects.Funding: NHMRC.

Physical activity and frequency of wheezing, and exercise-induced bronchospasm in school-aged children
Conclusion: PA duration but not intensity is associated with higher FEV1 and lower wheezing and EIB frequency in school-aged children.

Protective factors against childhood asthma in rural China
This study aims to identify the possible factors accounting for the rural protection in China. Random samples of school children aged 5 to 7 were recruited from Hong Kong and rural China (Conghua). Conghua is a rural area in Southern China 200 kilometers north of Hong Kong. The parents completed a detailed questionnaire including the validated ISAAC core questionnaires and an environmental questionnaire to ascertain the possible environmental risk factors in rural Conghua. A total of 17,587 children (14,152 from Conghua and 3,435 from Hong Kong) were successfully recruited. In Conghua, the reported prevalence of current wh...

Sensitisation as a predictor of asthma development among wheezing toddlers in secondary healthcare
Conclusions: the majority of wheezing toddlers in secondary healthcare develops asthma at school age. Sensitisation to inhalant allergens is the strongest predictor of asthma and has added predictive value when combined with non-invasive determinants.

An exposure-response relation for soluble platinum-salt exposed workers and sensitization
Conclusions: A robust exposure respons relation was observed. Indications exist that recent exposure explains the risk for platinum salt sensitization most strongly. The implications of these findings will be discussed.

Adolescents with asthma - Everyday life at school
Conclusion: More than half of the adolescents expressed that asthma had a negative impact on daily activities and that asthma affected physical education. This study identified several factors that could be enhanced and thus improve the everyday life in school for adolescents with asthma.

Adult asthma, allergy and eczema in Stockholm (3HE-study)-associations with energy use, building characteristics and home environment factors
In conclusion, asthma, allergies or eczema among adults in Stockholm are more common in buildings with less energy use for space heating, in larger buildings and in apartments with recent redecoration, mould odour, water leakage and humid air. Dampness, mould, redecoration and increased energy efficiency in buildings may have consequences for asthma and allergy.

Preschool children's asthma and allergic symptoms in Chongqing, China, associated with parental health: Reporting bias or shared home environment
Conclusions: Consistent associations between home dampness and children's asthma and allergy were found. Reporting bias could influence prevalence of children's asthma and allergy, and adjustment for parental health can be needed, especially in ecological analysis.

Respiratory efficiency and incidence of selected pulmonary diseases depending on exposure to ambient particulate matter (PM10)
Conclusion: The results prove a significant role of PM air pollution in development of diseases causing bronchial stricture. The risk of flow limitation highly depends on place of living, particularly among non-smokers.
