Mitochondrial function contributes to oxysterols-induced osteogenic differentiation in mouse embryonic stem cells
This study investigated the effect of an oxysterol combination of 22(S)-hydroxycholesterol and 20(S)-hydroxycholesterol (SS) on osteogenic differentiation of ESCs and the alterations to mitochondrial activity during differentiation. Osteogenic differentiation was assessed by alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, matrix mineralization, mRNA expression of osteogenic factors, runt-related transcription factor 2, osterix, and osteocalcin, and protein levels of collagen type IA (COLIA) and osteopontin (OPN). Oncostatin M-dependent Mcl-1 induction mediated by JAK1/2-STAT1/3 and CREB contributes to bioenergetic improvements and protective effects against mitochondrial dysfunction in cortical neurons
In conclusion, our findings indicated that OSM induces Mcl-1 expression via activation of ERK1/2, JAK1/2, STAT1/3, and CREB; furthermore, OSM-mediated Mcl-1 induction contributes to bioenergetic improvements and neuroprotective effects against 3-NP toxicity in cortical neurons. OSM may thus serve as a novel neuroprotective agent against mitochondrial dysfunction commonly associated with pathogenic mechanisms underlying neurodegeneration.

Dominant negative Ras attenuates pathological ventricular remodeling in pressure overload cardiac hypertrophy
We examined the possible anti-hypertrophic effect of Ras inhibition in vitro using rat neonatal cardiomyocytes (NRCM) and in vivo in the setting of pressure-overload left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy (POH) in rats. Ras functions were modulated via adenovirus directed gene transfer of active mutant Ras-Val12 or dominant negative mutant N17-DN-Ras (DN-Ras). TRPV6 channel modulates proliferation of insulin secreting INS-1E beta cell line
In conclusion, this study demonstrates for the first time the expression of TRPV6 in INS-1E cells and rat pancreatic beta cells and describes its role in modulating calcium signaling, beta cell proliferation and insulin mRNA expression. In contrast, TRPV6 fails to influence insulin secretion.

Leukotriene B4 receptor-2 contributes to chemoresistance of SK-OV-3 ovarian cancer cells through activation of signal transducer and activator of transcription-3-linked cascade
In this study, we found that the low-affinity leukotriene B4 receptor-2 (BLT2) and its ligand leukotriene B4 were highly up-regulated in cisplatin-resistant SK-OV-3 ovarian cancer cells and play critical roles in mediating the chemoresistance through the activation of signal transducer and activator of transcription-3 (STAT-3) and the subsequent up-regulation of interleukin-6 (IL-6).
