Biodegradable, UV-blocking, and antioxidant films from lignocellulosic fibers of spent coffee grounds
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Sep 7:126798. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.126798. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPlastics are strong, flexible, and inexpensive and hence desirable for packaging. However, as they biodegrade very slowly, their waste remains a global burden and pollution, warranting a search for safer alternatives. Towards this end, residual fibers from biowaste, such as spent coffee grounds (SCGs), stand out for creating biodegradable packaging materials. Herein, lignocellulosic fibers from SCG were extracted, and various amounts (0.6, 0.8, 1.0, and 1.2 g) were solubilized using 68 % ZnCl2 and crosslinked with sal...

Calcium ion cross-linked sodium alginate hydrogels containing deferoxamine and copper nanoparticles for diabetic wound healing
Int J Biol Macromol. 2022 Jan 20:S0141-8130(22)00095-2. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2022.01.080. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTChronic non-healing diabetic wounds and ulcers can be fatal, lead to amputations, and remain a major challenge to medical, and health care sectors. Susceptibility to infection and impaired angiogenesis are two central reasons for the clinical consequences associated with chronic non-healing diabetic wounds. Herein, we successfully developed calcium ion (Ca2+) cross-linked sodium alginate (SA) hydrogels with both pro-angiogenesis and antibacterial properties. Our results demonstrated that deferoxamine (...

Int J Biol Macromol. 2022 Aug 30:S0141-8130(22)01839-6. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2022.08.136. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBone tissue engineering is a field to manufacture scaffolds for bone defects that cannot repair without medical interventions. Ceramic nanoparticles such as bredigite have importance roles in bone regeneration. We synthesized a novel strontium (Sr) doped bredigite (Bre) nanoparticles (BreSr) and then developed new nanocomposite scaffolds using polycaprolactone (PCL), poly lactic acid (PLA) by the 3D-printing technique. Novel functional nanoparticles were synthesized and characterized using field emissi...

A versatile technique for indiscriminate detection of unlabeled biomolecules via double-enhanced Raman scattering
Int J Biol Macromol. 2022 Dec 26:S0141-8130(22)03152-X. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2022.12.241. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSurface-enhanced Raman scattering is a rapid, highly sensitive and non-destructive technique, whereas, it was still limited to designing different types of enhancing substrates or using probe molecules to only identify single biomolecules. Especially, some special biomolecules have weak Raman signals in solid state, so it is a huge challenge to obtain their enhanced Raman signals in liquid. To solve the problem, a double-enhanced Raman scattering (DERS) detection platform was developed in this study ba...

Green process for isolation and purification of poly( β-L-malic acid) from Aureobasidium spp. by an integrated ion exchange and membrane separation
This study developed an organic solvent and CaSO4 -free process for the industrial-scale production of PMLA. Firstly, calcium ion was removed at pH 9.2 by pH adjustment with Na2CO3, and the generated CaCO3 was reused in the fermentation process. Then, the D296 resin was selected to isolate the PMLA from the Ca2+-free broth, where the adsorption data were both primely described by the Freundlich and Langmuir equation, while Freundlich model better fit the process than Langmuir equation, indicating that it was non-monolayer adsorption of PMLA on the resin. Meanwhile, a three-step gradient elution with phosphate buffer (i.e.,...

Development and evaluation of sodium alginate-basil seeds mucilage beads as a suitable carrier for controlled release of metformin.
Abstract Sodium alginate (SA) is a natural biopolymer that is used as biodegradable and non-toxic material in medical and pharmaceutical fields. Although crosslinked SA with calcium ions in the presence of monovalent salts are unstable. The aim of this work is to employe plant mucilage in combination of SA beads to improve the properties of SA beads. SA beads containing metformin drug (MET) were modified using basil seed mucilage (BSM) to achieve controlled release was investigated. The presence of BSM in the SA structure results in more stability, less swelling, and consequently lower release. The effect of pH ...

Engineering alginate hydrogel films with poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-valerate) and graphene nanoplatelets: Enhancement of antiviral activity, cell adhesion and electroactive properties
Int J Biol Macromol. 2022 Aug 9;219:694-708. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2022.08.039. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA new biodegradable semi-interpenetrated polymer network (semi-IPN) of two US Food and Drug Administration approved materials, poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-valerate) (PHBV) and calcium alginate (CA) was engineered to provide an alternative strategy to enhance the poor adhesion properties of CA. The synthesis procedure allows the additional incorporation of 10 % w/w of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs), which have no cytotoxic effect on human keratinocytes. This quantity of multilayer graphene provides superior antivir...
