Intranasal tissue necrosis associated with opioid abuse: Case report and systematic review
ConclusionIntranasal opioid abuse is a prevalent condition associated with chronic pain and tissue necrosis that is clinically concerning for invasive fungal disease. Whereas IFRS must be excluded, even in patients without known immunodeficiency, complete resolution of symptoms can be expected following surgical debridement with cessation of opioid abuse. Nose blowing after endoscopic sinus surgery does not adversely affect outcomes
ConclusionNose blowing after ESS does not appear to measurably improve symptoms of nasal congestion or general sinonasal quality of life, nor does it seem to adversely affect the frequency or severity of postoperative epistaxis during the first postoperative week. Judicious nose blowing may be permissible immediately after uncomplicated ESS. Level of Evidence1b. Laryngoscope, 2017

Randomized controlled trial of steroid ‐soaked absorbable calcium alginate nasal packing following endoscopic sinus surgery
ConclusionsThis study demonstrated that steroid‐soaked, absorbable nasal packing can be used to enhance wound healing after endoscopic sinus surgery and to prevent polypoid changes in the nasal mucosa. Level of Evidence1b. Laryngoscope, 2017

Analysis of factors associated with electing endoscopic sinus surgery
ConclusionBaseline total SNOT‐22 and endoscopy scores are associated with treatment crossover, but reported sleep dysfunction is the only significant independent predictor of treatment crossover. Level of Evidence2c. Laryngoscope, 2017

Elimination of pain improves specificity of clinical diagnostic criteria for adult chronic rhinosinusitis
ConclusionClinical diagnostic criteria overestimate the prevalence of chronic rhinosinusitis. Removing facial pain, ear pain, dental pain, and headache increased specificity without a concordant loss in sensitivity. Given the high prevalence of sinusitis, improved clinical diagnostic criteria may assist primary care providers in more accurately predicting the presence of inflammation, thereby reducing inappropriate antibiotic use or delayed referral for evaluation of primary headache syndromes. Fabrication and validation of a low ‐cost, medium‐fidelity silicone injection molded endoscopic sinus surgery simulation model
ConclusionsSimulation models have proven efficacy in endoscopic skill and procedural training. The group developed a novel low‐cost, medium‐fidelity sinus training model utilizing three‐dimensional modeling and printing. Testing of this model revealed high ratings for both face and construct validity for a range of endoscopic procedures. Strong interest in using this model for resident training was unanimous among all survey participants. Level of EvidenceNA Laryngoscope, 2016

Antibiotics in eosinophilic chronic rhinosinusitis: Rethinking maximal antimicrobial medical therapy
ConclusionsThe use of antibiotics without independent anti‐inflammatory properties have limited efficacy in patients with eCRS. The concept of maximal medical therapy using antibiotics must continue to evolve in the setting of new evidence for inflammatory subtypes of CRS. Level of Evidence2b. Laryngoscope, 2016

Prevalence of polyp recurrence after endoscopic sinus surgery for chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis
ConclusionsPolyp recurrence is common after ESS with control of polyps up to 18 months found in approximately 60% to 70% of patients. Investigation into both surgical and medical management strategies is warranted to improve upon the observed prevalence of recurrence. Level of Evidence2c. Laryngoscope, 2016

Balloon dilation of sinus ostia in the Department of Defense: Diagnoses, actual indications, and outcomes
ConclusionsBalloon dilation of sinus ostia has an expanding role in treating sinus disease. In the studied population, BCD is often utilized for alternate indications for which there is currently no evidence of efficacy. Future studies are needed to evaluate the efficacy of this technology in treating these alternate indications. Level of Evidence4. Laryngoscope, 2016

Nasal obstruction has a limited impact on sleep quality and quality of life in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis
ConclusionsNasal obstruction appears to have a limited association with CRS‐specific QOL and CRS‐associated decrease in SQ. Further, the NOSE instrument, because it contains a question about sleep, may have overlap with the PSQI as a measure of SQ. The total NOSE score in CRS patients does not appear to be purely a measure of nasal obstruction. Level of Evidence4 Laryngoscope, 2016

Chronic rhinosinusitis identification in administrative databases and health surveys: A systematic review
ConclusionMost health administrative data and health surveys examining CRS did not consider the accuracy of case identification. For unselected populations, administrative data and health surveys using self‐reported diagnoses inaccurately identify patients with CRS. Epidemiological results based on such data should be interpreted with these results in mind. Laryngoscope, 2015

Allergic reaction to ortho‐phthalaldehyde following flexible laryngoscopy
We present three cases of patients who developed significant allergic reactions following repeated laryngoscopic examinations. Subsequent intradermal allergy testing confirmed sensitivity to OPA. In addition, we reviewed the current literature, which includes 17 similar reactions reported in nine patients across disciplines. Allergic reaction to OPA is uncommon, but a potentially under‐reported severe complication of repeated endoscopy. Level of EvidenceNA Laryngoscope, 2015

Comorbidities in patients with all‐positive symptoms on sinonasal outcomes test quality‐of‐life instrument
ConclusionThe SNOT‐20 questionnaire assists clinicians to monitor outcomes in patients treated for CRS. However, clinicians should suspect other underlying chronic conditions in SNOT‐20 pan‐positive patients. Level of Evidence3B. Laryngoscope, 2015

The influence of spray cryotherapy on wound healing following endoscopic sinus surgery in chronic rhinosinusitis
ConclusionsThese preliminary results reveal an improvement in postoperative scores, demonstrating enhanced healing following spray cryotherapy. However, without patient subjective outcomes, the study is limited. Additional studies with longer follow‐up and larger samples are needed to describe the effects of cryotherapy on wound healing. Impact of educational intervention on the interrater agreement of nasal endoscopy interpretation
ConclusionsThis study demonstrates a limited baseline level of interrater agreement of nasal endoscopy interpretation among otolaryngology residents. The interrater agreement for the majority of the characteristics that were evaluated improved after educational intervention. Further study is needed to improve nasal endoscopy interpretation.
