Predicting hospitalizations for patients with chronic kidney disease
CONCLUSIONS: We developed an algorithm that uses medical claims to identify Medicare patients with CKD stages 3 to 5 who are at highest risk of being hospitalized in the near term. This algorithm could be used as a decision support tool for clinical programs focusing on management of patient populations with CKD.PMID:37729531 | DOI:10.37765/ajmc.2023.89428

Development and Validation of a Claims-Based Model to Predict Levels of Obesity
Am J Epidemiol. 2023 Aug 30:kwad178. doi: 10.1093/aje/kwad178. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWe developed and validated a claims-based algorithm that classifies patients into obesity categories. Using Medicare (2007-2017) and Medicaid (2000-2014) claims data linked to two electronic health records (EHR) systems in Boston, Massachusetts, United States, we identified a cohort of patients with an EHR-based BMI measurement. We used regularized regression to select from 137 variables and built generalized linear models to classify patients with BMI≥25, BMI≥30 and BMI≥40. We developed the prediction model using EHR system-...

General practitioners' perspectives regarding early developmental surveillance for autism within the australian primary healthcare setting: a qualitative study
CONCLUSIONS: The study highlighted the need for practice and policy changes, including further training of GPs alongside sufficient time to complete developmental checks and appropriate financial remuneration through a Medicare billing item. Further research is needed on implementation and scale up of a national surveillance program for early identification of developmental disabilities, including autism.PMID:37563549 | PMC:PMC10416397 | DOI:10.1186/s12875-023-02121-6

Impact of Primary Care Exception Expansion on Family Medicine Resident Billing During the COVID-19 Pandemic
CONCLUSIONS: With the PCE expansion, senior family medicine resident physicians at UWFMR used higher-complexity billing codes at a rate approximating that of attending physicians. The findings of this study have implications regarding the financial well-being and sustainability of primary care residency training and raise a relevant policy question about whether the PCE expansion should persist. More research is needed to determine whether these findings were replicated in other primary care residency practices, the impact on resident education, and the impact on patient outcomes.PMID:37540540 | DOI:10.22454/FamMed.2023.548357
