Computer-aided diagnosis of ischemic stroke using multi-dimensional image features in carotid color Doppler
CONCLUSIONS: Based on the extracted quantitative features in the CCD images, the proposed CAD system provides valuable suggestions for assisting physicians in improving ischemic stroke diagnoses during carotid ultrasound examination.PMID:35797889 | DOI:10.1016/j.compbiomed.2022.105779

The Sky's the Limit: Expanding Nursing's Contribution to Acute Stroke Science
Am J Crit Care. 2022 Jul 1;31(4):266-274. doi: 10.4037/ajcc2022109.ABSTRACTStroke is the number one cause of preventable disability in adults in the United States. Significant advances have occurred in medications and technology supporting rapid stroke diagnosis and treatment during the past 30 years, along with blurring of the lines of what traditionally constituted nursing or medical research. Ischemic stroke is a disease of vascular insufficiency that mirrors myocardial infarction more than any other neurologic diagnosis. My primary program of research is focused on exploration of methods to improve intracranial blood f...

International Union of Angiology (IUA) consensus paper on imaging strategies in atherosclerotic carotid artery imaging: From basic strategies to advanced approaches
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of mortality and disability in developed countries. According to WHO, an estimated 17.9 million people died from CVDs in 2019, representing 32% of all global deaths. Of these deaths, 85% were due to major adverse cardiac and cerebral events. Early detection and care for individuals at high risk could save lives, alleviate suffering, and diminish economic burden associated with these diseases.Carotid artery disease is not only a well-established risk factor for ischemic stroke, contributing to 10% –20% of strokes or transient ischemic attacks (TIAs), but it is also a surro...

Network pharmacological analysis of active components of Tongqiao Huoxue Decoction in the treatment of intracerebral hemorrhage
CONCLUSIONS: In summary, the results of this study suggest that the mechanism of action of TQHXD in the treatment of ICH involves multiple targets and signaling pathways related to its occurrence and development. This study not only provides a new theoretical basis for the treatment of ICH with traditional Chinese medicine, but also provides new ideas for the research and development of drugs for the treatment of ICH.PMID:35722393 | PMC:PMC9201131 | DOI:10.21037/atm-22-1403

Analysis of the demographic characteristics and clinical profile of acute ischemic strokes admitted to the emergency centre in the Somalia population
This study aimed to define the etiological, demographic characteristics, classification of stroke and functional status of patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) admitted to the emergency centre, and to create projections to evaluate the incidence and genetic aspects of stroke.METHODS: The study population consisted of patients who applied to the emergency centre between 1 May 2017 and 1 May 2021 and were diagnosed with acute ischemic stroke (AIS). Patient demographics, season of onset, risk factors, laboratory data, imaging results, infarct location, AIS subtype and treatment outcomes were collected, and compared.RESUL...

New strategy for clinical etiologic diagnosis of acute ischemic stroke and blood biomarker discovery based on machine learning
RSC Adv. 2022 May 16;12(23):14716-14723. doi: 10.1039/d2ra02022j. eCollection 2022 May 12.ABSTRACTAcute ischemic stroke (AIS) is a syndrome characterized by high morbidity, prevalence, mortality, recurrence and disability. The longer the delay before proper treatment of a stroke, the greater the likelihood of brain damage and disability. Computed tomography and nuclear magnetic resonance are the primary choices for fast diagnosis of AIS in the early stage, which can provide certain information about infarction location and degree, and even the vascular distribution of lesions responsible for strokes. However, this is quite...

Stroke in Chagas disease: from pathophysiology to clinical practice
Rev Soc Bras Med Trop. 2022 Jun 6;55:e0575. doi: 10.1590/0037-8682-0575-2021. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTDespite substantial progress toward its control, Chagas disease continues to be a major public health problem in Latin America and has become a global health concern. The disease affects approximately 6 million people, of whom 20-40% will develop cardiomyopathy over the years after the initial Trypanosoma cruzi infection. Chagas cardiomyopathy is the most serious and frequent manifestation of Chagas disease. Clinical manifestations vary widely according to the severity of myocardial dysfunction, ranging from asymptomatic ...

The diagnostic and prognostic value of copeptin in patients with acute ischemic stroke and transient ischemic attack: A systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: The above systematic review and meta-analysis suggests that monitoring the copeptin levels may help predict the long-term prognosis of ischemic stroke efficiently. Determining the copeptin level may help individualize the management of ischemic stroke patients, keep stroke risk lower, reduce post-stroke complications, including patient death, and minimize healthcare costs.PMID:35621091 | DOI:10.5603/CJ.a2022.0045
