VATA-ADL: The Visual Analogue Test for Anosognosia for Activities of Daily Living
CONCLUSIONS: Anosognosia (overestimation of abilities) for ADL is frequent, even in post-acute stages post-stroke. Some other patients underestimated their abilities, indicating that poor metacognition of one's own abilities in brain damaged patients is bi-directional. Both types of misestimation may have clinical consequences worth considering for the wellbeing of patients and their carers.PMID:35313346 | DOI:10.1093/arclin/acac009

Children with perinatal stroke are at increased risk for autism spectrum disorder: Prevalence and co-occurring conditions within a clinically followed sample
DISCUSSION: Children with perinatal stroke have an increased prevalence of ASD (11.4%) than in the general population. ASD concerns arise at a similar age as the general population, yet ASD is diagnosed almost two years later than the general population and 3.60 years after first concerns present. Co-occurring neurological conditions are common. Clinicians must be aware of increased prevalence and implement screening as part of routine care for all pediatric patients with perinatal stroke.PMID:34308766 | DOI:10.1080/13854046.2021.1955150

Applying the RISE Model of Resilience in Partners Post-Stroke: A Qualitative Analysis
CONCLUSION: The constructs within the RISE Model were supported by the interviews. The impact of disability does not remain confined to a single individual and instead branches out into the broader social context, including close interpersonal relationships. A deeper understanding of resilience and its relationship with intrapersonal, interpersonal and socio-ecological constructs would add value to our understanding and fostering of resilience in persons with disabilities and/or chronic illness.CLINICAL TRIAL INFORMATION: NCT03335358.PMID:34228090 | DOI:10.1093/abm/kaab053

Case report of prenatal bilateral cerebellar infarction: implications for social-behavioral functioning.
CONCLUSIONS: These findings add to growing evidence that the cerebellum plays an important role in social development, and that early cerebellar injury may represent an acquired pathway for ASD. Complex medical histories may obscure or delay diagnosis of ASD, highlighting the importance of early evaluation using a multidisciplinary approach. PMID: 30698067 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Executive functioning as a predictor of stroke rehabilitation outcomes.
CONCLUSIONS: Executive functioning and depression are robust predictors of functional status following stroke rehabilitation. Although not consistently a significant predictor, pain might also be a useful addition to predictive models. PMID: 30676883 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Neuropsychological outcome following thalamic stroke in adolescence: an identical twin comparison.
CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest risk for deficits in encoding of new verbal information following bilateral thalamic stroke in adolescence, as well as risk for persistent cognitive deficits despite initial improvements. This is consistent with descriptions of anterograde memory impairments in adults with similar lesions. PMID: 30472911 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

An Examination of a Simplified Stroke Rehabilitation Program for Reducing Family Caregiver ’s Burden for Stroke Patients in Rural China
AbstractWith stroke being one of the leading causes of disability worldwide, families and social systems may face strain as they adjust to a caregiving role. This strain may be amplified in family systems living in rural areas due to limited access to resources. Thus, it is important for helping professionals such as couple, marriage, and family therapists to understand what facets of this disability are linked with caregiver strain as well as to explore and understand various interventions that may ease caregiver burden. Using existing data from 177 pairs of stroke patients and their family caregivers in rural Mainland Ch...
