Young Patients with Unknown Stroke and Little P Wave in ECG.
Authors: Chen YH, Chen YY, Huang WJ, Xiao FY Abstract Here we report two young patients with atrial fibrillation/atrial flutter complicated with cardiogenic cerebral embolism. Electrophysiological study revealed a large area of low-voltage zone or area of electric silence in both sides of the atrium during restoration of sinus rhythm, and the echocardiogram showed loss of mechanical function of the atrium. The electrical-mechanical dysfunction of the atrium was considered to be the cause of embolic event in this type of patient who was "very low" stroke risk atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter. The idiopathic, fi...

Prognostic Impact of Left Atrial Minimal Volume on Clinical Outcome in Patients with Non-Obstructive Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy.
In conclusion, LAVmin was independently associated with increased risk of HF, stroke, or mortality in patients with HCM and was superior to LAVmax in predicting clinical outcome in this population. PMID: 30158386 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Long-Term Efficacy and Safety of Left Atrial Appendage Closure Procedures
Int Heart J. 2023 Mar 15. doi: 10.1536/ihj.22-639. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe aim of the present single-center, nonrandomized, retrospective study was to assess the safety and long-term efficacy of percutaneous left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) procedures and to compare the different LAAC devices and therapeutic regimes in this respect.Medical data of 136 patients (pts) (mean age, 72.5 ± 7.6 years; score for atrial fibrillation stroke risk estimation [CHA2DS2-VASc], 4.6 ± 1.6; and score for estimation of major bleeding risk for patients on anticoagulant therapy [HAS-BLED], 2.6 ± 0.9) who underwent percutaneous...

Non-Vitamin K Antagonist Oral Anticoagulants Versus Warfarin in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation with Coronary or Peripheral Artery Disease.
Authors: Zhang H, Xue Z, Yi D, Li X, Tan Y, Li J Abstract The efficacy and safety of non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs) in atrial fibrillation (AF) with coronary or peripheral artery disease (CAD or PAD) remain largely unresolved. We, therefore, conducted a meta-analysis to explore the effect of NOACs compared with warfarin in these populations. We systematically searched the Cochrane Library, PubMed, and Embase databases for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving NOACs versus warfarin in AF patients with CAD or PAD. A random-effect model was selected to pool the risk ratios (RRs) and 95% co...
