Contemporary Practice and Optimising Referral Pathways for Implantable Cardiac Monitoring for Atrial Fibrillation after Cryptogenic Stroke
Diagnosing atrial fibrillation (AF) in patients following Cryptogenic stroke (CS) has therapeutic implications that can reduce the risk of further strokes. However, it's indolent and paroxysmal nature makes this challenging. Prolonged rhythm monitoring using implantable loop recorders (ILRs) can significantly increase the AF detection rate in the clinical trial paradigm. Whether this can be translated to real-world practice is unknown. An evaluation of referral pathways, workload and real-world efficacy may help select patients and inform service development.

Atrial fibrillation is associated with poor long-term outcome after mechanical thrombectomy for anterior large vessel occlusion stroke
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is one of the leading causes of acute ischemic stroke (AIS). The aim of our study was to determine the influence of AF on the long-term outcome of patients with AIS due to anterior circulation large vessel occlusion (LVO) treated with mechanical thrombectomy (MT).

Embolic infarct topology differs between atrial fibrillation subtypes and embolic stroke of undetermined source
The lack of superiority of anticoagulation over antiplatelet therapy in embolic stroke of undetermined source (ESUS) may be in part due to the misclassification of radiographic ESUS patterns as cardioembolic. In this imaging analysis, we sought to differentiate clinical and radiographic patterns of ESUS patients from patterns in patients with a highly probable cardioembolic source.

Changing trends and factors influencing anticoagulant use in patients with acute ischemic stroke and NVAF at discharge in the NOACs era
We sought to explore the trends and influencing factors of the use of anticoagulants in patients with acute ischemic stroke and non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) at discharge in the era of novel oral anticoagulants (NOACs).

Ability of the DANCAMI to predict the risk ischemic stroke and mortality in patients with atrial fibrillation/flutter
Comparison of the danish comorbidity index for acute myocardial infarction (DANCAMI), the charlson comorbidity index (CCI), the elixhauser comorbidity index (ECI), and the CHA2DS2-VASc score to predict ischemic stroke, cardiovascular mortality, and all-cause mortality after atrial fibrillation/flutter.

Diagnosis of atrial fibrillation in young patients with ischemic stroke: A systematic review and meta-analysis
The recommended cardiac rhythm evaluation to determine the etiology of ischemic stroke (IS) is similar in all patients regardless of their age and includes an electrocardiogram and at least a 24-hour heart rhythm monitoring. However, it is known that the main causes of IS vary according to patients ’ age. There is a higher preponderance of arterial dissections and patent foramen ovale in younger patients, while atrial fibrillation (AF) is more common in older patients.

Outcome of 312 Japanese Patients with Carotid Endarterectomy and Factors Associated with Cardiovascular Events—A Single-center Study in Japan
Background: There have only been a few reports regarding the outcomes and risk factors after CEA. To clarify the factors associated with outcome in patients with carotid stenosis who underwent carotid endarterectomy (CEA), we investigated cardiovascular events and mortality in the Kyushu Medical Center in Japan. Methods: We consecutively registered patients with significant carotid stenosis who had CEA performed over 10 years and compared the incidences of stroke, myocardial infarction, and death. On admission, we evaluated medical records for stroke risk factors, including hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hypercholesterol...

Impact of Atrial Fibrillation and Inadequate Antithrombotic Management on Mortality in Acute Neurovascular Syndrome
Conclusions: Patients with AF have more severe stroke and higher mortality than stroke patients without AF. Adherence to the antithrombotic treatment guidelines for the prevention of AF-related cardioembolic strokes is suboptimal. Further studies are needed to evaluate the impact of current antithrombotic treatment guidelines on mortality.

Efficacy of NeuroFlo Device in Treatment of Patients with Atrial Fibrillation
We report subgroup analyses of outcomes in SENTIS patients with a history or new diagnosis of AF. Among patients with AF, those treated with NeuroFlo demonstrated significant improvement over those not treated for multiple end points: global efficacy end point (P = .030), modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score 0-2 versus 3-6 (P = .029), and stroke-related mortality (P = .015). There was a significant improvement in global end point for those aged 60 years or older (P = .042) and 80 years or older (P = .017), with a trend toward improvement for age 70 years or older (P = .055), and significant improvement in those wh...

The Impact of Prior Antithrombotic Status on Cerebral Infarction in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation
Background: Anticoagulation effectively prevents cardioembolic stroke in atrial fibrillation (AF) patients, whereas it is less effective than antiplatelet therapy (AT) in noncardioembolic stroke prevention. We hypothesized that the ischemic lesion pattern and vascular patency would differ according to the antithrombotic treatment status in AF patients. Methods: The medical records of 1078 acute ischemic stroke patients with AF were retrospectively reviewed. Patients were classified according to medication at stroke onset: (1) optimal anticoagulation (OAC; international normalized ratio [INR] 1.7-3.0; n = 36); (2) suboptim...

The Association Between Atrial Fibrillation and Poststroke Seizures is Influenced by Ethnicity and Environmental Factors
This study assessed whether ethnicity affects the association between AF and poststroke seizure (PSS) development. We hypothesized that Royal Melbourne Hospital ([RMH] Melbourne) patients will have significantly higher incidence of AF-related PSS than in the Jinling Hospital (Nanjing) population.

The Use of Oral Anticoagulants in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation in the Emergency Department
Atrial Fibrillation is the leading cause of embolic stroke, yet less than half of high-risk patients with atrial fibrillation are on adequate stroke prevention with oral anticoagulants. Guidelines for the primary prevention of stroke recognize the emergency department as a location for physicians to identify atrial fibrillation and initiate anticoagulants. We sought to compare anticoagulant prescription rates in patients with atrial fibrillation in various provider settings to identify opportunities for improvement in cardioembolic stroke prevention.
