Prognostic significance of age in patients with acute ischaemic stroke treated with intravenous thrombolysis
CONCLUSIONS: AIS patients treated with reperfusion therapy and aged 80 or more have around a six times higher risk of an unfavourable outcome or death within three months of stroke onset compared to those aged below 60. Higher NIHSS score after IVT, any signs of disability before stroke as measured with mRS, and higher CRP levels are independent risk factors for worse prognosis in the elderly.PMID:35060614 | DOI:10.5603/PJNNS.a2022.0010

Mechanical thrombectomy for acute ischaemic stroke during therapeutic anticoagulation: long-term outcomes.
CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: In anticoagulated patients with AIS, MT does not affect long-term outcomes. PMID: 33202029 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Sex-related differences among ischaemic stroke patients treated with intravenous thrombolysis in Poland.
CONCLUSIONS: Of the ischaemic stroke patients treated with intravenous thrombolysis, women had worse long-term outcomes than men. This discrepancy may be explained by the older age and higher proportion of cardio-embolic strokes with more severe baseline deficits. However, multiple logistic analysis did not show that sex itself had an impact on the greater mortality in women after a stroke, or on the poorer prognosis. Statement by a Working Group conceived by the Polish National Consultants in Cardiology and Neurology addressing the use of implantable cardiac monitors in patients after ischaemic embolic stroke of undetermined source.
Abstract INTRODUCTION: Stroke remains one of the main causes of death and the most common cause of long-term disability in adults. Embolic strokes of undetermined source (ESUS) amount to a significant proportion of all ischaemic strokes. Detection of atrial fibrillation (AF) in this group of patients would allow for a major therapeutic decision to switch from antiplatelets to oral anticoagulants and therefore significantly reduce the risk of recurrence. STATE OF THE ART: Current technology allows long-term continuous ECG monitoring with different systems, including implantable cardiac monitors (ICM). However,...

Transthoracic echocardiography in the assessment of cardiogenic causes of ischaemic stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: 1. Transthoracic echocardiography performed routinely in all AIS patients affects the treatment in a very low percentage of cases. 2. The group that could benefit the most from TTE examination includes people without established indications for chronic anticoagulant therapy, in particular patients after myocardial infarction and people with additional clinical symptoms. 3. In patients with AIS, the diagnostic sensitivity of TTE in the detection of PFO is low. Young people with a cryptogenic ischaemic stroke should undergo a transoesophageal assessment. Importance rating of risk factors of ischemic stroke in patients over 85 years old in the polish population.
CONCLUSION: The course of brain stroke in the Polish population is more severe in patients over 85 years old than in younger ones. The key risk factor in this group is atrial fibrillation. PMID: 29196059 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Secondary prevention of stroke in elderly people in Poland--results of PolSenior study.
CONCLUSIONS: Secondary cardiovascular preventive therapy in Poland is used too rarely in older people after stroke, and it especially concerns anticoagulant therapy in those with a history of atrial fibrillation. Structured educational programmes should be developed in Poland to improve usage of secondary preventive therapy in the elderly. PMID: 24821632 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]
