Ministernotomy or sternotomy in isolated aortic valve replacement? Early results.
Conclusions: Ministernotomy for AVR is a safe method and does not increase morbidity and mortality. It significantly reduces post-operative blood loss and shortens hospital stay. Ministernotomy can be successfully used as an alternative method to sternotomy. PMID: 30647743 [PubMed]

Revisiting the risks of incident atrial fibrillation: a narrative review. Part 2.
Abstract Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained cardiac arrhythmia with increasing incidence worldwide. Much focus has been directed towards AF prevention, given the morbidity and mortality from stroke, heart failure, and dementia. There are a number of common conditions associated with the onset of AF including, but not limited to, increased alcohol consumption, body weight, exercise, and stress. To reduce the incidence of AF, public health campaigns and targeted patient interventions may be warranted to promote balanced alcohol intake, appropriate exercise, and stress management to prevent AF and ...

Orthostatic hypotension and cardiovascular risk.
Abstract Orthostatic hypotension (OH) is a cardinal sign of cardiovascular (CV) autonomic dysfunction as a result of autonomic nervous system failure to control the postural hemodynamic homeostasis. The proportion of individuals with OH increases with aging and chronic conditions, such as neurodegenerative diseases, hypertension, heart failure, diabetes, renal dysfunction, autoimmune diseases and cancer. In those over 70 years, more than 20% can be affected. It is now increasingly recognized that a direct relationship exists between OH and each step of the CV disease continuum, eventually leading to end-stage hear...

CHADS2 and CHA2DS2-VASc scores predict long-term mortality in patients with typical atrial flutter after catheter ablation.
CONCLUSIONS: In patients referred for typical AFL ablation, the CHADS2 score can be applied for prognosis assessment. A successful AFL ablation procedure should not divert the attention from recognizing and addressing other medical issues that have an impact on long-term mortality, which remains very high in this particular population. Risk factors modification for primary and secondary prevention of atrial fibrillation - Part II.
Abstract Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia and is associated with increased risk of death, stroke and heart failure. The prevalence and incidence of AF is increasing due to better overall medical treatment, longer survival and increasing incidence of cardiometabolic and lifestyle risk factors. Treatment of AF and AF-related complications significantly increase health-care costs. In addition, use of conventional rhythm control strategies (i.g. antiarrhyhtmic drugs and catheter-ablation) is associated with limited efficacy for sinus rhythm maintenance and serious adverse effects. Aggress...

Temporal trends in availability and efficacy of catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter in a highly populated urban area.
CONCLUSIONS: Over the 12-year follow-up a considerable increase in the availability and efficacy of AF / AFl ablations was documented. PMID: 32242404 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Long-term echocardiographic evaluation of asymptomatic patients undergoing minimally invasive valve repair for severe primary mitral regurgitation.
CONCLUSIONS: Minimally invasive mitral valve repair is a safe and efficient method of correction in asymptomatic patients. The intervention should be performed regardless of ventricular and atrial dimensions. PMID: 32267134 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Catheter ablation of cavotricuspid isthmus in patients with atrial flutter: predictors of long-term outcomes.
CONCLUSION: Ablation of CTI with minimal number of electrodes is safe and effective. There are specific predictors of events during long-term outcome. PMID: 32500993 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Association between cardiovascular disease, cardiovascular drug therapy, and in-hospital outcomes in patients with COVID-19: data from a large single-center registry in Poland
CONCLUSION: Among cardiovascular risk factors and diseases, HF and DM appeared to increase in-hospital COVID-19 mortality, whereas the use of cardiovascular drugs was associated with lower mortality.PMID:33926173 | DOI:10.33963/KP.15990
