Registry Studies of Stroke in Japan
J Atheroscler Thromb. 2023 Jul 19. doi: 10.5551/jat.RV22008. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRecently, the Cerebrovascular and Cardiovascular Disease Control Act was enacted, for which it was necessary to establish a comprehensive and accurate nationwide database and promote rational and economical stroke countermeasures in Japan, thus serving the public interest. Among the many studies on stroke registries, the Fukuoka Stroke Registry, a regional cohort, provides highly accurate information, and the Japanese Stroke Data Bank, a nationwide cohort, is highly comprehensive. The findings of these studies have contributed to the...

The Stroke 8: A Daily Checklist for Inpatient Stroke Management
We describe the Stroke 8 checklist, designed to be part of the daily assessment of patients hospitalized with acute stroke. It consists of 8 items classified into 3 categories as follows: (1) stroke prevention: antithrombotic use, statin use, glucose control, blood pressure control; (2) prevention of complications: deep venous thrombosis prophylaxis, temperature control; and (3) recovery and disposition: fluids and nutrition, mobility and therapy. The Stroke 8 checklist has been implemented in 3 formats over an 8-year period: laminated cards, an electronic documentation template, and an electronic template supplemented wit...

Novel Diagnostic and Monitoring Tools in Stroke: an Individualized Patient-Centered Precision Medicine Approach.
Authors: de Villiers S, Swanepoel A, Bester J, Pretorius E Abstract Central to the pathogenesis of ischaemic stroke are the normally protective processes of platelet adhesion and activation. Experimental evidence has shown that the ligand-receptor interactions in ischaemic stroke represent a thrombo-inflammatory cascade, which presents research opportunities into new treatment. However, as anti-platelet drugs have the potential to cause severe side effects in ischaemic stroke patients (as well as other vascular disease patients), it is important to carefully monitor the risk of bleeding and risk of thrombus in pati...

Abstract 201: Are Patients With Atrial Fibrillation Willing to Consider New Strategies to Prevent Stroke? A Qualitative Analysis of Community-Based Focus Groups Session Title: Abstract Poster Session II
Conclusion: Focus group participants expressed a fear of debilitating stroke, with varying levels of acceptance of inconveniences and potential bleeding associated with blood thinners. Among a subset of participants, there was willingness to consider new stroke prevention therapies; however, this was preferred with a known, trusted physician. Subspecialized clinicians offering new therapies may be challenged to establish perceived mutual respect with patients, traditionally built over time, and this may be required for patients to consider new therapies. Future research is needed to determine best practices for both establ...
