Patients with high blood pressure unlikely to reduce salt
(European Society of Cardiology) Patients with high blood pressure are relying solely on medication to reduce their risk of heart attack, stroke and heart failure, rather than decreasing salt intake as instructed by their physicians, according to research presented today at ESC Congress 2018, the annual meeting of the European Society of Cardiology.

Hold the salt: Gut reaction may impair the brains of mice
(NIH/National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke) In a new mouse study, scientists link changes in the gut caused by a high-salt diet to impaired blood flow in the brain. This reduced blood flow can eventually lead to impaired cognition that could be reversed by changing back to a normal diet. The study, published in Nature Neuroscience, also provides molecular clues for treating these problems.

Heart attack and stroke patients prescribed statin medication upon discharge have better outcomes
(Intermountain Medical Center) Patients with a prior history of heart attacks or stroke have better outcomes when cholesterol-lowering medications are used after they're discharged from the hospital, according to a new study from the Intermountain Medical Center Heart Institute in Salt Lake City.
