Conformal Medical launches LAA seal study
Conformal Medical said yesterday that it launched an investigational device exemption trial for a device designed to seal off the heart’s left atrial appendage to help prevent stroke in atrial fibrillation patients. Nashua, N.H.-based Conformal’s device is designed to adapt to the each patient’s individual physiology, to be easier to implant with less imaging and without general anesthesia. The 45-patient, single-arm study is designed to evaluate the device’s performance, with an estimated primary completion date of April 2020 and a final completion date of June 2025, according to ClinicalTrials.gov. Th...

Continuation with apixaban treatment is associated with lower risk for hospitalization and medical costs among elderly patients.
Conclusion: Elderly patients with NVAF in the U.S. who continued with apixaban treatment had a lower risk of MB-related hospitalization and lower MB- and stroke/SE-related medical costs compared to patients who switched to another OAC. PMID: 31120309 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Abstract 5: Prevalence, Characteristics, and Accuracy of Stroke Diagnosis for Scene Transports to a Comprehensive Stroke Center by Helicopter Emergency Medical Services: A One Year Retrospective Evaluation
Publication date: July–August 2019Source: Air Medical Journal, Volume 38, Issue 4Author(s): Ekta Panjrolia, Anne Jackson, Stacie Stevens, Lorie Selleck, V. Ramana Feeser, Bert Bogue, Kathy Baker, Harinder DhindsaIschemic strokes affect 795,000 people per year in the US and are a major cause of long-term disability and mortality. These patients are often assessed by EMS at the scene and transported to appropriate centers of care for further evaluation and treatment. Utilization of helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS) greatly improves access to comprehensive stroke centers (CSC). However, the number of patients who...

Spatial-Intensity Transform GANs for High Fidelity Medical Image-to-Image Translation.
Authors: Wang CJ, Rost NS, Golland P Abstract Despite recent progress in image-to-image translation, it remains challenging to apply such techniques to clinical quality medical images. We develop a novel parameterization of conditional generative adversarial networks that achieves high image fidelity when trained to transform MRIs conditioned on a patient's age and disease severity. The spatial-intensity transform generative adversarial network (SIT-GAN) constrains the generator to a smooth spatial transform composed with sparse intensity changes. This technique improves image quality and robustness to artifacts, a...

Sex Differences in Stroke Hospitalization Incidence, 30-Day Mortality, and Readmission in a Regional Medical Center in the Southwestern United States
CONCLUSIONS: Men experienced higher stroke hospitalization incidence, although women exhibited higher 30-day mortality. Age composition explained sex differences in mortality, but higher male stroke hospitalization incidence represents a larger public health issue that suggests the need for behavioral change at the population level. No meaningful sex differences emerged in treatment, mortality, or readmission.PMID:33655312 | DOI:10.14423/SMJ.0000000000001221
