The impact of stroke on bone properties and muscle-bone relationship: a systematic review and meta-analysis
AbstractTo systematically review available evidence related to the characteristics of bone changes post-stroke and the relationship between various aspects of muscle function (e.g., strength, spasticity) and bone properties after stroke onset. An extensive online database search was undertaken (last search in January 2019). Articles that examined the bone properties in stroke patients were included. In conclusion, preclinical data generated a plausible hypothesis of a link between vitamin D status and extra-skeletal events, including cardiovascular endpoints. Whether the vitamin D endocrine system is redundant for the human vascular system or whether the RCTs have not been optimally designed to answer the research question is thus not yet settled.

History of cardiovascular disease and cardiovascular biomarkers are associated with 30-day mortality in patients with hip fracture
ConclusionPreexisting CVD was associated with increased 30-day mortality after a hip fracture. Furthermore, high levels of NT-proBNP and low levels of HDL cholesterol were associated with increased 30-day mortality.

25(OH) vitamin D and functional outcomes in older adults admitted to rehabilitation units: the safari study
ConclusionsIn our study, 25(OH)D concentration showed a positive association with functional outcomes at 3  months. The association is stronger below the usual cutoff for “deficiency.” Dosage of 25(OH)D concentration may help identify geriatric rehabilitation patients at risk for a worse functional recovery.

Predictors of near-term fracture in osteoporotic women aged ≥65 years, based on data from the study of osteoporotic fractures
ConclusionsSeveral clinical characteristics predictive of hip and non-vertebral fracture within a 1-year follow-up period among elderly women with osteoporosis were identified, and a subset of those for hip fracture was incorporated into a risk assessment tool. Assessment of these risk factors may help guide osteoporosis treatment choices by identifying patients in whom there is urgency to treat. Additional research is needed to validate the findings of this study and the accuracy of the risk assessment tool.

Clinical characteristics and risk factors of postoperative pneumonia after hip fracture surgery: a prospective cohort study
ConclusionIntrinsic factors and major clinical interventions were all important risk factors of POP in patients after hip fracture surgery. Targeted preventive measures to mitigate the above risk factors may help in reducing the incidence of POP.

Risk of hip fracture following stroke, a meta-analysis of 13 cohort studies
This study systematically reviews prospective and retrospective cohort studies evaluating the risk of hip fracture following stroke. Stroke survivors are at high risk of hip fracture and had a 1.5-fold increased risk compared to stroke-free men and women of the same age. Chronic effects of stroke on hip bone density and tibial morphology: a longitudinal study
Conclusions There is evidence of continuous trabecular bone loss in the paretic tibial distal epiphysis among chronic stroke patients, but it tends to plateau after 2 years of stroke onset. The steady state may have been reached earlier in the hip and tibial diaphysis.

Risk and adverse outcomes of fractures in patients with Parkinson’s disease: two nationwide studies
Conclusions PD was associated with higher risk of fracture. Patients with PD had more complications and mortality after fracture. Fracture prevention and attention to post-fracture adverse events are needed for this susceptible population.

Increased risk of cardiovascular events in end-stage renal disease patients with osteoporosis: a nationwide population-based cohort study
Conclusions The results showed that osteoporosis was significantly associated with the subsequent risk of cardiovascular events in patients with ESRD. When encountering patients with ESRD and osteoporosis, physicians should be alert to the subsequent cardiovascular risk in incident dialysis patients to prevent the subsequent occurrence of these adverse events.
