Oxidative stress in cerebrovascular disease and associated diseases
Front Endocrinol (Lausanne). 2023 Feb 17;14:1124419. doi: 10.3389/fendo.2023.1124419. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTCellular aging is the most severe risk factor for neurodegenerative disease. Simultaneously, oxidative stress (OS) is a critical factor in the aging process, resulting from an imbalance between reactive oxygen and nitrogen species and the antioxidant defense system. Emerging evidence indicates that OS is a common cause of several age-related brain pathologies, including cerebrovascular diseases. Elevated OS disrupts endothelial functional ability by diminishing the bioavailability of nitric oxide (a vascular dilat...

Low serum albumin: A neglected predictor in patients with cardiovascular disease
Eur J Intern Med. 2022 May 7:S0953-6205(22)00181-9. doi: 10.1016/j.ejim.2022.05.004. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAlbumin, the most abundant circulating protein in blood, is an essential protein which binds and transports various drugs and substances, maintains the oncotic pressure of blood and influences the physiological function of the circulatory system. Albumin also has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antithrombotic properties. Evidence supports albumin's role as a strong predictor of cardiovascular (CV) risk in several patient groups. Its protective role extends to those with coronary artery disease, heart failu...

Health benefits of astaxanthin against age-related diseases of multiple organs: A comprehensive review
Crit Rev Food Sci Nutr. 2022 Jun 16:1-66. doi: 10.1080/10408398.2022.2084600. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAge-related diseases are associated with increased morbidity in the past few decades and the cost associated with the treatment of these age-related diseases exerts a substantial impact on social and health care expenditure. Anti-aging strategies aim to mitigate, delay and reverse aging-associated diseases, thereby improving quality of life and reducing the burden of age-related pathologies. The natural dietary antioxidant supplementation offers substantial pharmacological and therapeutic effects against various dise...

Air Pollution: Another Threat to HDL Function
Int J Mol Sci. 2022 Dec 24;24(1):317. doi: 10.3390/ijms24010317.ABSTRACTEpidemiological studies have consistently demonstrated a positive association between exposure to air pollutants and the incidence of cardiovascular disease, with the strongest evidence for particles with a diameter < 2.5 μm (PM2.5). Therefore, air pollution has been included among the modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular outcomes as cardiovascular mortality, acute coronary syndrome, stroke, heart failure, and arrhythmias. Interestingly, the adverse effects of air pollution are more pronounced at higher levels of exposure but were also sho...

Pharmacological and Molecular Insight on the Cardioprotective Role of Apigenin
Nutrients. 2023 Jan 12;15(2):385. doi: 10.3390/nu15020385.ABSTRACTApigenin is a naturally occurring dietary flavonoid found abundantly in fruits and vegetables. It possesses a wide range of biological properties that exert antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and antibacterial effects. These effects have been reported to be beneficial in the treatment of atherosclerosis, stroke, hypertension, ischemia/reperfusion-induced myocardial injury, and diabetic cardiomyopathy, and provide protection against drug-induced cardiotoxicity. These potential therapeutic effects advocate the exploration of the cardioprotective actio...

< em > In-vitro < /em > antioxidant, lipoxygenase inhibitory, and < em > in-vivo < /em > muscle relaxant potential of the extract and constituent isolated from < em > Diospyros kaki < /em > (Japanese Persimmon)
This study excellently rationalizes the traditional usage of D. kaki in curing various diseases. Furthermore, the docking results indicate, that the isolated compound fits well into the active site of the lipoxygenase, and makes strong interactions with the target protein.PMID:36895410 | PMC:PMC9989937 | DOI:10.1016/j.heliyon.2023.e13816
