Comparison of primary and secondary stroke prevention in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation: Results from the RAFFINE registry
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a predictor of severe stroke and early death in acute ischemic stroke patients.1 The prevalence of AF has increased as the Japanese population has aged.2 AF has been more common among patients with ischemic stroke than previously reported.3 In particular, AF patients with a history of stroke or TIA have had higher risks for stroke, hemorrhagic events, and death compared to those without.4,5 In these previous studies, most patients received warfarin for anticoagulation therapy.

Relationship between Alcohol Intake and Stroke Severity in Japanese Patients: a Sex- and Subtype-Stratified Analysis
Stroke is a severe disease that causes disability in many patients, warranting the urgent development of treatment options.1-4 Previous studies have reported that the risk of hemorrhagic stroke (HS) linearly increases with increasing alcohol intake.5-12 Furthermore, moderate alcohol intake has been shown to lower the risk of ischemic stroke (IS), and a J-curve association has been observed between alcohol consumption and morbidity rate of IS.7-14 These reports were similar in that they considered alcohol intake as a risk factor for stroke development.

The Risk of Intracranial Hemorrhage in Japanese Patients with Acute Large Vessel Occlusion; subanalysis of the RESCUE-Japan registry
Recanalization therapies such as intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) or endovascular treatment (EVT) improve acute ischemic stroke outcomes; however, they carry the risk of intracranial hemorrhage (ICH). The present study assessed the frequency and predictive factor of ICH in Japanese patients with acute large vessel occlusion.

Initially Missed or Delayed Diagnosis of Subarachnoid Hemorrhage: A Nationwide Survey of Contributing Factors and Outcomes in Japan
Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) remains a significant cause of mortality in Japan. The Japan Stroke Society set out to conduct a nationwide survey to identify contributing factors and outcomes of SAH misdiagnosis.

Development of Hemorrhage-prone Anastomoses in Asymptomatic Moyamoya Disease —A Comparative Study with Japan Adult Moyamoya Trial
This study used the data set of cerebral angiography in Asymptomatic Moyamoya Registry (AMORE) Study and Japan Adult Moyamoya (JAM) Trial at enrollment. The development of 3 subtypes of collateral vessels, including lenticulostriate, thalamic, and choroidal anastomosis, was evaluated on cerebral angiography.

Impact of Low Ambient Temperature on the Occurrence of Spontaneous Intracerebral Hemorrhage-Analysis of Population-Based Stroke Registry in Toyama, Japan
Although several studies have reported that some meteorological factors such as ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure, affect the incidence of spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), the correlation remains unclear. This retrospective time-series analysis was aimed to clarify the effects of meteorological parameters on the incidence of ICH.

Efficacy of Endovascular Revascularization in Elderly Patients with Acute Large Vessel Occlusion: Analysis from the RESCUE-Japan Retrospective Nationwide Survey
Conclusions: The elderly population could achieve favorable outcomes comparable to the nonelderly population, especially when they achieve any recanalization by EVT. Elderly patients should not be excluded from recanalization therapy with EVT because of age.

Outcomes in Elderly Japanese Patients Treated for Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage: A Retrospective Nationwide Study
Objective: Japan has the largest elderly population in the world. As data on the clinical outcomes in elderly patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH), including those older than 80 years, are lacking, we analyzed the characteristics of 54,805 aSAH patients and recorded their treatments and clinical outcomes using a Japanese nationwide inpatient database. Methods: Using the Japanese Diagnostic Procedure Combination database, we identified aSAH patients aged 18 years or older who were hospitalized between July 1, 2010 and March 31, 2016.

Trends in surgical procedures for spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage in Japan
Minimally invasive surgery for spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) has become increasingly popular in recent years. However, there are no reports on the recent trends in surgical procedures for spontaneous ICH. To investigate current trends in surgical methods for spontaneous ICH using a nationwide inpatient database from Japan.
