Abstract 131: Recurrent Acute Cardiovascular Events and Statin Use Session Title: Poster Session AM
Conclusion: While statin use substantially increased after an index CV event, nearly 40% of patients remained untreated, increasing their recurrent CV event risk by 76%. Initiation and continuation of statin therapy after CV events remains a large public health opportunity for patients with ASCVD.

Development and Validation of Electronic Quality Measures to Assess Care for Patients With Transient Ischemic Attack and Minor Ischemic Stroke Original Articles
Conclusions— It is feasible to construct valid eQMs for processes of transient ischemic attack and minor ischemic stroke care. Healthcare systems with EHRs should consider using electronic data to evaluate care for their patients with transient ischemic attack and to complement and expand quality measurement programs currently focused on patients with stroke.

Impact of Ezetimibe on the Rate of Cardiovascular-Related Hospitalizations and Associated Costs Among Patients With a Recent Acute Coronary Syndrome: Results From the IMPROVE-IT Trial (Improved Reduction of Outcomes: Vytorin Efficacy International Trial) Original Articles
Conclusions— Addition of ezetimibe to statin therapy in patients with a recent acute coronary syndrome leads to reductions in cardiovascular-related hospitalizations and associated costs, with the greatest cost offsets in high-risk patients. These cost reductions may completely offset the cost of the drug once ezetimibe becomes generic, and may lead to cost savings from the perspective of the healthcare system, if treatment with ezetimibe is targeted to high-risk patients. Abstract 195: Statin Use and Its Facility Level Variation in Patients With Ischemic Cerebrovascular Disease: Insights From the Department of Veterans Affairs Session Title: Poster Session II
Conclusions: The use of statin and especially guideline-recommended statin intensity is suboptimal in ICVD patients, especially patients without concomitant IHD or PAD. There is significant facility-level variation in receipt of guideline directed statin therapy in ICVD patients. Interventions are needed to improve guideline directed moderate to high-intensity statin use and reduce variation in care in this high risk group.

Intracranial Hemorrhage After Ischemic Stroke: Incidence, Time Trends, and Predictors in a Swedish Nationwide Cohort of 196 765 Patients Original Articles
Conclusions— The incidence of ICrH within 1 year after ischemic stroke was 2% per year at risk, about 15 times higher compared with the reference population. Over the study period, ICrH risk increased within the first 30 days but decreased thereafter. Previous ICrH, thrombolysis, and male sex affected the risk, whereas an increased use of antithrombotic treatments and statins did not.

Conclusion: While the majority of SI patients were on a statin, SI patients demonstrate a higher risk of some cardiovascular events; incur higher healthcare costs; and difficulty reaching LDL-C goals compared to patients without SI. Alternative treatment strategies are needed to better serve this at-risk patient population.

Conclusions: Compliance with OMT was low in all patients. Patients with PAD or ICVD were less likely to receive OMT compared with IHD. Our results suggest potential for improvement in OMT for all CVD patients especially those with PAD and ICVD.

Risk of Ischemic Stroke After an Acute Myocardial Infarction in Patients With Diabetes Mellitus Original Articles
Conclusions— Ischemic stroke is a fairly common complication after an AMI in patients with diabetes mellitus, but the risk of stroke has decreased during recent years. The increased use of evidence-based therapies contributes importantly to this risk reduction, but there is still room for improvement.
