The HindIII and PvuII polymorphisms of lipoprotein lipase (LPL) gene reduce the risk of ischemic stroke (IS): A meta-analysis
Background: Lipoprotein lipase (LPL) polymorphisms were suggested to be the risk factor for ischemic stroke (IS). However, controversial results were obtained. Our objective was to investigate the association of LPL polymorphisms at Ser447Ter, HindIII (+/−), and PvuII (+/−) with IS risk. Methods: Literatures search were carried out on databases: PubMed, Web of science, the Cochrane database of system reviews, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Embase. Pooled odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) was calculated to detect the relationship between LPL polymorphisms and the risk of IS. Results...

Effectiveness of Trevo stent retriever in acute ischemic stroke: Comparison with Solitaire stent
Recently, mechanical thrombectomy with stent retriever has achieved faster and higher rates of recanalization for intracranial major vessel occlusion. However, comparative studies of the most widely used Solitaire and Trevo stents have been rarely published. The authors retrospectively reviewed a total of 200 patients who performed mechanical thrombectomy at our center during 4 years and divided patients into 2 groups: mechanical thrombectomy with Solitaire stent (Group 1: Solitaire) and mechanical thrombectomy with Trevo stent (Group 2: Trevo). All patients underwent a clinical assessment with National Institutes of Heal...

Bilateral visual loss and cerebral infarction after spleen embolization in a trauma patient with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura: A case report
We report a case of acute ischemic stroke following orthopedic surgery in a patient with post-SAE reactive thrombocytosis. Patient concerns: A 37-year-old woman with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) suffered from multiple trauma scheduled for open reduction and internal fixation for right tibial and left radius fracture five days after SAE. The patient did not have any thromboembolic complications, although the platelet counts increased from 43 × 109/L to 568 × 109/L within two days after SAE. Surgery was completed under general anesthesia with tracheal intubation without complications. The patient co...

In-hospital mortality and morbidity of pediatric scoliosis surgery in Japan: Analysis using a national inpatient database
Several previous reports have elucidated the mortality and incidence of complications after pediatric scoliosis surgery using nationwide databases. However, all of these studies were conducted in North America. Hence, this study aimed to identify the incidence and risk factors for in-hospital mortality and morbidity in pediatric scoliosis surgery, utilizing the Diagnosis Procedure Combination database, a national inpatient database in Japan. We retrospectively extracted data for patients aged less than 19 years who were admitted between 01 June 2010 and 31 March 2013 and underwent scoliosis surgery with fusion. The primar...

Retrospective analysis of prognosis and risk factors of patients with stroke by TOAST
To determine differences in 90-day mortality and identify risk factors among different etiological classifications of ischemic stroke using the Trial of ORG 10172 in Acute Stroke Treatment (TOAST) classification. Our retrospective analysis included 538 ischemic stroke patients. The cause of stroke was categorized according to the TOAST criteria, and 90-day mortality rates were obtained through the patient follow-up. Age, sex, previous medical history, and clinical features were used in the analysis of potential risk factors. There were 38 deaths during the 90-day follow-up period. Patients in the undetermined cause subgr...

Early changes in fibrinogen after administration of alteplase are associated with the short-term efficacy of thrombolysis
The authors aimed to determine whether early changes in fibrinogen were associated with the efficacy of intravenous thrombolysis at 24 hours after alteplase infusion. The authors retrospectively reviewed a consecutive series of 56 patients with acute ischemic stroke treated with alteplase in the clinical database. The fibrinogen levels were monitored at the first and fourth hours after alteplase infusion. Additionally, the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) scores were recorded to define the short-term efficacy of intravenous thrombolysis before and 24 hours after alteplase infusion. The patients were d...

Preliminary study of time maximum intensity projection computed tomography imaging for the detection of early ischemic change in patient with acute ischemic stroke
This study aimed to assess the accuracy of time maximum intensity projection computed tomography technique (tMIP), which reflects the maximum value for the time phase direction from the dynamic volume data for each projected plane, for detection of EIC, against that of NCCT. Retrospective review of NCCT, cerebral blood volume in CT perfusion (CTP-CBV), and tMIP of 186 lesions from 280 regions evaluated by Alberta Stroke Program Early CT Score (ASPECTS) in 14 patients with acute middle cerebral artery stroke who had undergone whole-brain CTP using 320-row area detector CT was performed. Four radiologists reviewed EIC on NC...

An overlooked cause in a patient with recurrent ischemic stroke: A case report
Rationale: The majority of ischemic strokes are due to cardioembolism, large vessel atherothromboembolism, small vessel occlusive disease, or other unusual mechanisms. In most clinical settings, many strokes without a well-defined etiology requires a thorough diagnostic evaluation, otherwise the underlying cause might be easily overlooked. Here we report on the rare cause of a patient with recurrent stroke. Patient concerns: A 50-year-old female patient had a 4-year history of recurrent acute onset of neurological deficits. Diagnoses: Contrast transcranial Doppler ultrasound detected a typical “curtain” appeara...

Different utilization of intensive care services (ICSs) for patients dying of hemorrhagic and ischemic stroke, a hospital-based survey
In this study, CI patients had a longer HSD (mean 14.3 days), as compared with ICH patients (mean 8.3 days); however, the ICH patients had a higher percentage of early entry within the first 24 hours of admission into ICS than CI group (95.1% vs 60.0%, P = .003). A higher rate of CI patients died in holidays or weekends than those with ICH (44.0% vs 21.4%, P = .051). DNR, requested mainly from direct descendants (children or grandchildren), was coded in all 25 CI patients (100.0%) and 38 ICH patients (90.5%). More cases with early DNR coded within 24 hours after admission occurred in ICH group (47%, 12% in CI p...
