NIHSS Score May Help Predict Health Literacy Levels after Acute Ischemic Stroke (P7.158)
CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that there may be an association between the NIHSS score and HL levels in patients hospitalized with AIS. Additional studies incorporating a larger number of patients are warranted to discern if this is a true association. Patient NIHSS score might be a factor healthcare professionals can utilize to help identify hospitalized AIS patients who require intensive stroke risk reduction education.Study Supported by:University of Florida COM - Jacksonville Dean's GrantDisclosure: Dr. Sanders has received personal compensation for activities with Biogen Idec. Diagnostic Yield of Prolonged Cardiac Rhythm Monitoring in Cryptogenic Stroke (I2-1.003)
CONCLUSIONS: Our study demonstrates the diagnostic yield of cardiac rhythm monitoring of up to 30 days is significantly lower than previously reported. This may be secondary to differences in monitoring devices used, the variability in definition of cryptogenic stroke, and duration of monitoring. Alternatively, longer duration of monitoring with implantable devices may be needed to detect paroxysmal AF, particularly in those with clinical, electrocardiographic or echocardiographic features associated with this dysrhythmia.Disclosure: Dr. Kalani has nothing to disclose. Mobile Cardiac Outpatient Telemetry Identifies Occult Atrial Fibrillation After Cryptogenic Stroke (I2-2.002)
CONCLUSIONS:Atrial fibrillation is detected on MCOT in a substantial minority of cryptogenic stroke patients. Age蠅60 and the presence of prior cortical or cerebellar strokes should raise suspicion for occult AF. These data may aid in the selection of patients for prolonged arrhythmia monitoring.Disclosure: Dr. Ingala has nothing to disclose. Dr. Jara has nothing to disclose. Influence of hospital-level practices on readmission after ischemic stroke
Conclusions: Hospital practices have a role in stroke readmission that is complex and poorly understood. Further work is needed to identify specific strategies to reduce readmission rates and to ensure that public reporting of readmission rates will not result in adverse unintended consequences.

Factors associated with unfavorable outcome in minor ischemic stroke
Conclusions: Intra- and extracranial vascular imaging, NIH Stroke Scale items such as leg weakness and extinction/inattention, and their combination, as well as female sex and advanced age, may be useful for predicting unfavorable outcomes in patients with minor stroke.

Current practices in feeding tube placement for US acute ischemic stroke inpatients
Conclusions: Variation in feeding tube insertion rates across hospitals is large. Differences across hospitals may be partly explained by external factors beyond the patient-centered decision to insert a feeding tube.

Lysophosphatidylcholine to stratify risk of ischemic stroke in TIA
TIA portends an increased risk for ischemic stroke. This risk can be reduced by >50% with early implementation of stroke prevention therapy.1 Stroke risk in TIA can be estimated using the ABCD2 score, diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), and presence of large arterial atherosclerosis (LAA).2 However, not infrequently TIAs deemed to be low risk precede stroke and TIAs deemed to be high risk do not. Thus additional methods to stratify stroke risk in TIA are needed.

Embolic Stroke of Undetermined Source (ESUS): A single center study from Argentina (P1.060)
CONCLUSIONS: Even with complete work-up, upon initial assessment more than one third of ischemic stroke patients met criteria for ESUS. After one year follow-up, it is possible to reclassify some of them, mostly as cardioembolic. More studies are needed to establish unidentified etiologies and the effect of longer follow-ups. Young-aged stroke in Korea: changing patterns of risk factors and etiologies (P7.120)
CONCLUSIONS: Compared to the previous study, the proportion of male to female ratio decreased. While smoking and drinking rates decreased in male, metabolic risk factors such as diabetes and dyslipidemia increased in both genders, which explain the increasing proportion of large artery atherosclerotic disease in female patients. The proportion of strokes associated with artery dissection increased, which may be due to the use of advanced diagnostic tools. Our data show that etiologies in young age strokes change depending on the changing risk factor profiles and extensiveness of advanced diagnostic work up.Disclosure: Dr. ...

Intravenous Tissue Plasminogen Activator Treatment for Acute Ischemic Stroke in the REGARDS Study (P7.138)
CONCLUSIONS:Our study of unselected US hospitals showed low tPA utilization. Documented reasons for non-use were suboptimal with the lowest among patients not evaluated by a stroke team. Our sample was not limited to hospitals participating in national quality improvement programs, thus increasing generalizability. Strategies that focus on earlier hospital arrival and educating both the public and healthcare field to increase tPA utilization are urgently needed.Disclosure: Dr. Sands has nothing to disclose.
