Association between left atrial appendage morphology evaluated by trans-esophageal echocardiography and ischemic cerebral stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation.
Authors: Sakr SA, El-Rasheedy WA, Ramadan MM, El-Menshawy I, Mahfouz E, Bayoumi M Abstract The left atrial appendage (LAA) represents one of the major sources of cardiac thrombi responsible for embolic stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). The aim of the present study was to evaluate LAA structure and functions by transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) in patients with AF to investigate the possible association between the different LAA morphologies and the patients' history of ischemic cerebral stroke. We included 50 patients with non-valvular AF (29 chronic, 21 paroxysmal), 24 patients (13 men) withou...

Risks of Ischemic Stroke/Transient Ischemic Attack Based on CHA < sub > 2 < /sub > DS < sub > 2 < /sub > -VASc Scores in Non-Atrial Fibrillation Chinese Patients with Sinus Rhythm
This study aims to evaluate the incidence of ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA) based on CHA2DS2-VASc scores in non-AF Chinese patients with sinus rhythm. We used health check-up data of 101,510 participants from the Kailuan Cohort Study. Participants' risk levels were defined by their CHA2DS2-VASc scores (range 0-3): Men with scores of 0, 1, or ≥ 2 and women with scores of 1, 2, or ≥ 3 were considered at low, intermediate, or high risk, respectively. Cox proportional hazards model was used to assess the association between the CHA2DS2-VASc-determined risk and the incidence of ischemic stroke/TIA.The mea...

Prognostic Value of Serum N-Terminal Pro-Brain Natriuretic Peptide Level over Heart Failure for Stroke Events and Deaths in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation.
Authors: Kuronuma K, Okumura Y, Morikawa T, Yokoyama K, Matsumoto N, Tachibana E, Oiwa K, Matsumoto M, Kojima T, Haruta H, Nomoto K, Sonoda K, Arima K, Kogawa R, Takahashi F, Kotani T, Ohkubo K, Fukushima S, Itou S, Kondo K, Chiku M, Ohno Y, Onikura M, Hirayama A, SAKURA AF Registry Investigators Abstract Atrial fibrillation (AF) and heart failure (HF) often coexist. The aims of this study were to explore the factors associated with the serum levels of N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP), and the association between prognosis and a history of HF or the serum NT-proBNP level in Japanese patients wit...

Long-Term Efficacy and Safety of Left Atrial Appendage Closure Procedures
Int Heart J. 2023 Mar 15. doi: 10.1536/ihj.22-639. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe aim of the present single-center, nonrandomized, retrospective study was to assess the safety and long-term efficacy of percutaneous left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) procedures and to compare the different LAAC devices and therapeutic regimes in this respect.Medical data of 136 patients (pts) (mean age, 72.5 ± 7.6 years; score for atrial fibrillation stroke risk estimation [CHA2DS2-VASc], 4.6 ± 1.6; and score for estimation of major bleeding risk for patients on anticoagulant therapy [HAS-BLED], 2.6 ± 0.9) who underwent percutaneous...
