Addressing Stroke Risk Factors in Black and White Americans: Findings from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2009-2010.
CONCLUSIONS: We found that addressed hypertension and hyperlipidemia in stroke naïve participants were significantly lower in Blacks than Whites. Our observations call attention to areas that require further investigation, such as why Black Americans may not be receiving evidence-based pharmacologic therapy for hypertension and hyperlipidemia or why Black Americans are not at goal blood pressure or goal LDL. A better understanding of this information is critical to preventing stroke and other vascular diseases. PMID: 26843791 [PubMed - in process]

Stroke Disparities: Disaggregating Native Hawaiians from other Pacific Islanders.
CONCLUSION: Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders with ischemic stroke have modestly different age of stroke presentation and burden of risk factors compared to each other. Disaggregating these two racial groups may be important to unmask any potential clinical differences in future studies. PMID: 26118142 [PubMed - in process]

Association of Hispanic ethnicity with acute ischemic stroke care processes and outcomes.
DISCUSSION: Hispanic AIS patients in this study were less likely to arrive at the hospital by ambulance, and experienced half the odds of a favorable outcome compared to others. Strategies to boost ambulance utilization among Hispanic AIS patients and identify contributors to this worrisome outcome disparity are needed. PMID: 25812247 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]

Fasting Serum Glucose and Cholesterol as Predictors of Cardiovascular Reactivity to Acute Stress in a Sample of African American College Students.
CONCLUSIONS: FSG was a better predictor of cardiovascular reactivity to stress than serum cholesterol concentration, predicting mean arterial pressure and stroke volume. This finding may be due to the association of glucose with diabetes, which is more prevalent in African Americans. PMID: 26118145 [PubMed - in process]

The Burden of Hypertension and Diabetes in an Emergency Department in Northern Tanzania.
Conclusions: The burden of hypertension and diabetes in a Tanzanian ED is high, and the ED may serve as an opportune location for case identification and linkage-to-care interventions. Given the large proportion of Africans with undiagnosed hypertension and diabetes, an ED-based screening program would likely identify many new cases of these diseases. The high burden of hypertension- and diabetes-related hospitalizations highlights the urgent need for improvements in primary preventative care in Tanzania. PMID: 31641323 [PubMed - in process]

Validation of an Albuminuria Self-assessment Tool in the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis.
CONCLUSIONS: The albuminuria self-assessment tool maintained good test characteristics in this large multi-ethnic cohort, suggesting it may be helpful for increasing awareness of albuminuria in an ethnically diverse population. PMID: 26676090 [PubMed - in process]

Social and Medical Determinants of Cardiometabolic Health: The Big Picture.
Authors: Puckrein GA, Egan BM, Howard G Abstract Cardiometabolic diseases, including diabetes and heart disease, account for >12 million years of life lost annually among Black adults in the United States. Health disparities are geographically localized, with ~80% of health disparities occurring within ~6000 (16%) of all 38,000 US ZIP codes. Socio-economic status (SES), behavioral and environmental factors (social determinants) account for ~80% of variance in health outcomes and cluster geographically. Neighborhood SES is inversely associated with prevalent diabetes and hypertension, and Blacks are four times mo...

Cost-effectiveness of Telephone-Delivered Education and Behavioral Skills Intervention for African American Adults with Diabetes
CONCLUSION: The combined intervention ICER for HbA1c is comparable to other education programs and the ICER to reduce the probability of complications falls below previously recommended long-term cut-off of $100,000, suggesting cost-effectiveness in an African American population.PMID:33883862 | PMC:PMC8054865 | DOI:10.18865/ed.31.2.217
