Long-term Outcomes of Japanese Type 2 Diabetic Patients With Biopsy-Proven Diabetic Nephropathy.
CONCLUSIONSOur study suggests that the characteristic pathological lesions as well as macroalbuminuria (severe proteinuria) were closely related to the long-term outcomes of biopsy-proven diabetic nephropathy in type 2 diabetes. PMID: 24089538 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The relative and combined ability of high sensitivity cardiac troponin T and N-terminal pro-BNP to predict cardiovascular events and death in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
ConclusionNT-proBNP and hs-cTnT appear to greatly improve the accuracy with which the risk of cardiovascular events or death can be estimated in patients with type 2 diabetes. PMID: 24089534 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Association of Subclinical Inflammation With Polyneuropathy in the Older Population: KORA F4 study.
CONCLUSIONSWe conclude that DSPN is linked to proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory, possibly compensatory, processes in the older general population. Future studies should clarify the temporal sequence and causality of these associations. PMID: 24009302 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Increased Risk of Cognitive Impairment in Patients With Diabetes Is Associated With Metformin.
CONCLUSIONSMetformin use was associated with impaired cognitive performance. Vitamin B12 and calcium supplements may alleviate metformin-induced vitamin B12 deficiency and were associated with better cognitive outcomes. Prospective trials are warranted to assess the beneficial effects of vitamin B12 and calcium use on cognition in older people with diabetes who are taking metformin. Association of glomerular filtration rate with outcomes of acute stroke in type 2 diabetic patients: results from the China National Stroke Registry.
CONCLUSIONSLow and high eGFRs (<45 ml/min/1.73m(2) or ≥120 ml/min/1.73m(2), respectively) are independent predictors of all-cause mortality and other poor outcomes after acute stroke in patients with type 2 diabetes. PMID: 24009297 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Determinants and Prognostic Value of Cardiovascular Autonomic Function in Coronary Artery Disease Patients with and without Type 2 Diabetes.
ConclusionsCardiovascular autonomic function in CAD patients is associated with several variables, including exercise capacity. Autonomic dysfunction predicts short-term cardiovascular events among CAD patients with T2D, but it is not as strong independent predictor as hs-CRP. Mediterranean Diet Reduces the Adverse Effect of the TCF7L2-rs7903146 Polymorphism on Cardiovascular Risk Factors and Stroke Incidence: A randomized controlled trial in a high-cardiovascular-risk population.
CONCLUSIONSOur novel results suggest that MedDiet may not only reduce increased fasting glucose and lipids in TT individuals, but also stroke incidence. PMID: 23942586 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Diabetes and end-stage renal disease synergistically contribute to increased incidence of cardiovascular events: A nation-wide follow-up study during 1998-2009.
ConclusionsDiabetes and ESRD synergistically increase risks of CV events. Proactive screening and control for diabetes in patients with ESRD should be built into our daily practice. PMID: 23920086 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

HbA1c and the Risks for All-Cause and Cardiovascular Mortality in the General Japanese Population: NIPPON DATA90.
CONCLUSIONSHigh HbA1c levels were associated with increased risk for all-cause mortality and death from CVD, coronary heart disease, and cerebral infarction in general East Asian populations, as in Western populations. PMID: 23877989 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Matrix Gla Protein Species and Risk of Cardiovascular Events in Type 2 Diabetic Patients.
CONCLUSIONSHigh dp-ucMGP levels were associated with increased CVD risk among type 2 diabetic patients, especially with the subtypes PAD and heart failure, while other MGP species were not related to CVD risk. These results suggest that a poor vitamin K status is associated with increased CVD risk. PMID: 23877986 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Fasting Glucose Level and the Risk of Incident Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Diseases.
CONCLUSIONSBoth low glucose level and impaired fasting glucose should be considered as predictors of risk for stroke and coronary heart disease. The fasting glucose level associated with the lowest cardiovascular risk may be in a narrow range. PMID: 23404299 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Detectable Subclinical Myocardial Necrosis Is Associated With Cardiovascular Risk in Stable Patients With Diabetes Mellitus.
CONCLUSIONThe presence of detectable subclinical myocardial necrosis in stable patients with diabetes mellitus is associated with heightened long-term risk for MACE, independent of traditional risk factors and glycemic control. PMID: 23393213 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Proinflammatory Cytokines, Adiponectin, and Increased Risk of Primary Cardiovascular Events in Diabetes Patients With or Without Renal Dysfunction: Results from the ESTHER study.
CONCLUSIONSIn particular, the absence of an association between CRP and a U-shaped association of adiponectin levels with incident cardiovascular events show that associations between circulating immune mediators and cardiovascular risk differ between diabetic patients and subjects of the general population.
