An investigation into the impact of enteric coated of aspirin in patients with newly diagnosed ischemic stroke (ECASIS)
Discussion: This trial will determine potential differences in the efficacy of EC Aspirin and plain Aspirin on the Thromboxane B2 level. Additionally, it will ascertain the tolerability and safety of both formulations of Aspirin in patients with newly diagnosed ischemic stroke. These results will either support the current notion of no difference between the two formulations. However, if a difference is found, this will invite for future trials exploring clinical outcomes occurrence between various formulations. Clinical trial registration: Clinicaltrials.gov NCT04330872 registered on April 2, 2020

The Association Between Peptic Ulcer Disease and Ischemic Stroke: A Population-Based Longitudinal Study
Abstract: Stroke is a common cause of death worldwide, but about 30% of ischemic stroke (IS) patients have no identifiable contributing risk factors. Because peptic ulcer disease (PUD) and vascular events share some common risk factors, we conducted a population-based study to evaluate the association between PUD and IS. We followed up a representative sample of 1 million residents of Taiwan using the National Health Insurance Research Database from 1997 to 2011. We defined patients who received medications for PUD and had related diagnosis codes as the PUD group, and a reference group matched by age and sex was sampled f...

Global longitudinal strain predicts incident atrial fibrillation and stroke occurrence after acute myocardial infarction
Abstract: Patients with acute myocardial infarction are at increased risk of developing atrial fibrillation. We aimed to evaluate whether speckle tracking echocardiography improves risk stratification for atrial fibrillation in these patients. The study comprised of 373 patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) treated with primary percutaneous coronary intervention. Patients had an echocardiogram performed at a median of 2 days after their STEMI. The echocardiograms consisted of conventional measurements and myocardial strain analysis by speckle tracking from 3 apical projections. The endpoint was ...

Association of CYP2J2 gene polymorphisms with ischemic stroke and stroke subtypes in Chinese population
In this study, genotyping was performed by using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) sequencing for 202 IS patients and 206 age- and sex-matched controls. Odds ratios (ORs) and confidence interval (CI) were estimated by multivariate logistic regression and PCR results were confirmed by DNA sequencing. A meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate the association of CYP2J2–50G>T polymorphism with the risk of IS in Chinese population by calculating pooled OR. Results: We found this polymorphism was significantly associated with IS (17.82% vs. 10.68%, P = 0.039). Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that GT genotype ...

Carotid atherosclerosis and its relationship to coronary heart disease and stroke risk in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus
Abstract: Carotid atherosclerosis (CA) and carotid plaque (CP) are highly correlated with cardiovascular disease. We aimed to determine the prevalence of CA and CP and their relationship with 10-year risks of stroke and coronary heart disease (CHD) in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). We studied 1584 T2DM patients aged 20 years and older. CA and CP were detected using ultrasonography. Ten-year stroke and CHD risk were determined using the United Kingdom Prospective Diabetes Study (UKPDS) risk engine. The prevalence of CA and CP increased gradually with age. Men had a higher prevalence of CA than women (CA: 58.18% vs 51.54%, P

Correlation between acute stroke-induced white matter lesions and insulin resistance
The present study was to examine the relationship between white matter lesions (WMLs) and insulin resistance (IR) in patients with acute stroke and evaluate clinical prognosis. Around 200 patients with initial onset of acute stroke including 146 patients (73.0%) with WMLs and 54 patients (27%) without WMLs were analyzed by neuropsychological scales. Fasting blood glucose (FBG), fasting insulin, blood lipid, homocysteine (Hcy), high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), creatinine, and uric acid, diabetes mellitus (DM), prediabetes (PD), and normal glucose (NG) were determined according to HbA1c levels. According to hom...

Effect of glycated hemoglobin index and mean arterial pressure on acute ischemic stroke prognosis after intravenous thrombolysis with recombinant tissue plasminogen activator
To determine whether glycated hemoglobin and mean arterial pressure (MAP) during thrombolysis are prognostic factors of intravenous thrombolysis with recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rt-PA) for acute ischemic stroke (AIS). A total of 125 AIS patients, who received rt-PA intravenous thrombolysis in our hospital, were included into the present study, and divided into good prognosis group and poor prognosis group. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to determine the prognostic factors of AIS treated by rt-PA thrombolysis, Spearman correlation analysis was used to analyze the correlatio...

Risk analysis of carotid stent from a population-based database in Taiwan
Abstract: Because stroke is the third leading disease that causes mortality in the world, the prevention of stroke from advanced carotid stenosis is an important issue. The carotid stent (CAS) is a less invasive to treat advanced carotid stenosis, but for high-risk patients it may cause some events after the procedure that reduces the benefit of stroke prevention. Because patients and their families have less information about risk of events after CAS and are easy concerned, this study calculates the individual probability of major adverse cardiovascular events including any stroke, myocardial infarction, or death after pr...
