Undetermined stroke with an embolic pattern--a common phenotype with high early recurrence risk.
CONCLUSIONS: Despite their younger age and more favorable risk factor profile compared with other phenotypes, USEP exhibited a high risk of stroke recurrence. PMID: 26224200 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]

Correlation between dietary selenium intake and stroke in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2003-2018
CONCLUSIONS: Dietary selenium had a negative and non-linear correlation with the risk of stroke in adults. The correlation varied across different population subgroups.KEY MESSAGESDietary selenium had a negative and non-linear correlation with the risk of stroke in adults.Non-linear negative correlation trends were observed in subpopulations of females, age <60 years, poverty-income ratio <2.14, overweight and obesity, hypertension, non-diabetes, and non-anaemia.Dietary selenium intake of approximately 105 μg per day has an optimum effect on stroke.PMID:35594240 | DOI:10.1080/07853890.2022.2058079

Role of female community health volunteers in ischemic stroke prevention, identification, referral and rehabilitation in Nepal
Ann Med Surg (Lond). 2021 Oct 8;72:102893. doi: 10.1016/j.amsu.2021.102893. eCollection 2021 Dec.ABSTRACTFor the past three decades, female community health volunteers (FCHVs) have been at the forefront of Nepal's health map and have contributed significantly to its improving health indicators such as maternal mortality rate and infant mortality rate. Given the changing epidemiology of Nepal and the shift of burden from communicable to non-communicable diseases (NCDs), it is important to revitalize their role with the changing times. The prevalence of ischemic stroke in Nepal is on the rise. However, very few people make i...

Mitochondrial encephalomyopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes syndrome: a case report from Nepal
Ann Med Surg (Lond). 2023 May 3;85(6):3026-3030. doi: 10.1097/MS9.0000000000000712. eCollection 2023 Jun.ABSTRACTMitochondrial encephalomyopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like syndrome (MELAS) is a rare neurodegenerative inherited disorder that is characterized by stroke-like episodes, seizures, endocrine, and multiple system involvement. It is important to consider it as a differential diagnosis in a young patient with stroke-like episodes as it is progressive and has multiple complications.CASE PRESENTATION: A 28-year-old male presented with slurring of speech and drowsiness for 7 h. He was a diagnosed case of type 2 ...

Simultaneous acute cardio-cerebral infarction associated with isolated left ventricle non-compaction cardiomyopathy
CONCLUSION: To the best of the author's knowledge, this is the first reported case of cardiocerebral infraction (CCI) in the setting of non-compaction left ventricle. Early and precise diagnosis is critical to the successful management of these conditions.PMID:36045823 | PMC:PMC9422203 | DOI:10.1016/j.amsu.2022.104172

Association between the liver fat score (LFS) and cardiovascular diseases in the national health and nutrition examination survey 1999-2016
CONCLUSIONS: NAFLD is usually asymptomatic, but this large study of a large general population shows that LFS is associated with CHD, CHF, angina pectoris, cardiovascular and all-cause mortality. Determining the LFS is worthwhile, as it identifies people with NAFLD, who may also be at increased cardiovascular risk.Key MessagesLiver fat score (LFS), a non-invasive marker of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), is associated with coronary heart disease (CHD), congestive heart failure (CHF) and angina.LFS is also associated with increased cardiovascular and all-cause mortality.Determining the LFS is worthwhile as it ide...

Clinical characteristics and prognostic factors of atrial fibrillation at a tertiary center of Pakistan - From a South-Asian perspective - A cross-sectional study
CONCLUSION: There was higher prevalence of chronic co-morbid conditions in the studied population leading to a higher CHA2DS2VASC Score. Sepsis and stroke were independently associated with higher in-hospital mortality.PMID:35003722 | PMC:PMC8718836 | DOI:10.1016/j.amsu.2021.103128

Obstructive sleep apnea risk and psychological health among non-Hispanic blacks in the Metabolic Syndrome Outcome (MetSO) cohort study.
Conclusion Our results suggest that non-Hispanic blacks with metabolic syndrome who experience anxiety and/or depression should be screened for OSA. Key messages This study assessed associations of moderate to severe depression and anxiety with risk of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) among non-Hispanic blacks with metabolic syndrome. Patients with depression had nearly two-fold increased odds of being at risk for OSA. Patients with anxiety had three-fold increased odds of being at risk for OSA. Diabetes and new-onset atrial fibrillation in a hypertensive population.
Conclusion Diabetes was modestly associated with new-onset AF in hypertensive patients with no ischemic vascular disease. Among diabetic patients, only obesity reached significance in its association with this arrhythmia. Key Messages Diabetes modestly associated with new-onset atrial fibrillation in hypertensive patients with no ischemic vascular disease. In the subgroup of patients with diabetes, only obesity reached significance in its association with atrial fibrillation. PMID: 26939743 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The association of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and atrial fibrillation: a review.
Authors: Juhani Käräjämäki A, Hukkanen J, Ukkola O Abstract Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is highly prevalent and causes an enormous burden to human health and health-care systems all over the world. A great proportion of this burden results from increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common chronic heart arrhythmia globally and it increases the risk of embolic stroke and heart failure. Recent studies have explored the association between NAFLD and AF with somewhat conflicting results. However, ultrasound-verified prospective studies concur that NAFLD is asso...
