Insulin resistance and the increased risk for smell dysfunction in US adults
ConclusionWe found a significant association between smell dysfunction and severe insulin resistance in older US adults. Our data suggests that insulin resistance may be mechanistically linked to loss of smell function. Level of Evidence4. Laryngoscope, 2017

Impact of obstructive sleep apnea in transsphenoidal pituitary surgery: An analysis of inpatient data
ConclusionsIn patients who underwent transsphenoidal pituitary surgery, OSA was associated with higher rates of certain pulmonary and airway complications. OSA was not associated with increased non–pulmonary/airway complications or inpatient mortality, despite older average age and higher comorbidity rates. Level of Evidence2C Laryngoscope, 2017

Disparities in grant funding for Chronic rhinosinusitis
ConclusionsThis study has demonstrated that over the last 10 years, CRS is disproportionately underfunded (∼$75 million) compared to other similarly prevalent chronic diseases such as asthma (∼$8.3 billion), diabetes (∼$47.2 billion), and dementia (∼$16.7 billion). We feel this justifies further research into identifying and reducing barriers to obtaining grant support for CRS. Level of EvidenceNA Laryngoscope, 2015

Management of non‐invasive rhinosinusitis in the immunosuppressed patient population
ConclusionThis data indicates that surgical treatment provides improved outcomes for patients presenting with acute exacerbations of rhinosinusitis related to their immunocompromised state. Given the limited study population, these findings may not apply to HIV‐positive or ARS patients, and further study should be undertaken in these groups. Level of Evidence4. Laryngoscope, 2015

Central skull base osteomyelitis
ConclusionsOsteomyelitis of the central skull base poses significant challenges for timely and accurate diagnosis. Aggressive management with antimicrobials, coupled with surgical debridement in select cases, may avoid serious neurologic morbidity and mortality. Level of EvidenceNA Laryngoscope, 2013

Chronic rhinosinusitis increased the risk of chronic periodontitis
ConclusionsThis study detected an increased risk for CP among patients suffering from CRS. CRS patients should be alerted to pay particular attention to their oral hygiene practices to prevent both CP and its downstream sequelae.

Invasive Fungal Rhinosinusitis
ConclusionsDSS and OS remain low for patients with AIFR. Extensive surgical resection in patients with these poor prognostic signs should be considered carefully in light of their poor survival. Long‐term survivors are at significant risk of sinonasal complications and should be followed closely. Level of Evidence4. Laryngoscope, 2012

Decreased SPLUNC1 expression is associated with Pseudomonas infection in surgically treated chronic rhinosinusitis patients who may require repeated sinus surgery
ConclusionsSinusitis with positive P. aeruginosa bacterial culture is associated with decreased SPLUNC1 sinus mucosa expression. Repeated sinus surgeries are more frequently needed for these patients. Level of Evidence4 Laryngoscope, 2013

Survival outcomes in acute invasive fungal sinusitis: A systematic review and quantitative synthesis of published evidence
Conclusions:The overall mortality of patients with AIFS remains high, with only half of the patients surviving. Diabetic patients appear to have a better overall survival than patients with other comorbidities. Patients who have intracranial involvement, or who do not receive surgery as part of their therapy, have a poor prognosis. Laryngoscope, 2012
