Prestroke Living Situation and Depression Contribute to Initial Stroke Severity and Stroke Recovery
We examined prospectively collected stroke center database variables, which included prestroke living situation, to determine if social isolation could be determined from existing data using living arrangement as a proxy. Patients were categorized into 4 groups hypothesized to represent increasing levels of social isolation: living with spouse, living with family, living alone with visiting services, and living alone.

Lacunar Infarcts, Depression, and Anxiety Symptoms One Year after Stroke
Mood disorders are frequent after stroke and are associated with poorer quality of life. Previous studies have reported conflicting results as to stroke subtype in the incidence of poststroke mood disorders. We explored the relationship between subcortical ischemic stroke subtype (lacunar) and presence of such symptoms at 1 year after stroke.

The Impact of Pre-Stroke Depressive Symptoms, Fatalism, and Social Support on Disability after Stroke
Psychological and social factors have been linked to stroke mortality; however, their impact on stroke disability is unclear. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of pre-stroke fatalism, depressive symptoms, and social support on 90-day neurologic, functional, and cognitive outcomes.

Examining the Inter-relations of Depression, Physical Function, and Cognition with Subjective Sleep Parameters among Stroke Survivors: A Cross-sectional Analysis
Goal: Stroke survivors commonly experience depression as well as deficits in physical and cognition function. Emerging evidence also suggests sleep quality is compromised poststroke. Our primary objective was to examine the association of subjective sleep parameters (ie, total PSQI score) with depression, health related quality of life, physical function, and cognition among stroke survivors. Materials and Methods: Cross-sectional analysis of 72 older adults with chronic stroke ( ≥6 months postischemic stroke) enrolled in a randomized controlled trial of exercise or cognitive enrichment.

Association between obstructive sleep apnea and risk of post-stroke depression: A hospital-based study in ischemic stroke patients
This study aimed to detect the correlation between OSA severity and post-stroke depression (PSD) in ischemic stroke patients.

Decreased Serum Netrin-1 as a Predictor for Post-Stroke Depression in Chinese Patients with Acute Ischemic Stroke
Experimental studies demonstrated that netrin-1 (NT-1) is an important factor influencing the recovery after ischemic stroke. However, whether NT-1 levels were associated with the post-stroke depression (PSD) remains unclear. We aimed to evaluate the relationship between NT-1 levels and PSD at 3 months in patients with ischemic stroke.

Sex Differences in Post-Stroke Depression in the Elderly
Post-stroke depression (PSD) occurs in approximately one-third of ischemic stroke patients. However, there is conflicting evidence on sex differences in PSD. We sought to assess sex differences in risk and time course of PSD in US ischemic stroke (IS) patients. We hypothesized that women are at greater risk of PSD than men, and that a greater proportion of women experience PSD in the acute post-stroke phase.

The Efficacy of Group Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Preventing Post-Stroke Depression: A Randomized Controlled Trial
In this study, group Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (G-ACT) was performed in acute stroke patients to see if it can effectively relieve depressive symptoms and improve neurological function. The efficacy was also evaluated in stroke patients of different severity.

A systematic review and evaluation of post-stroke depression clinical practice guidelines
Post-stroke depression is a depressive mood disorder that follows a cerebrovascular accident and is a burden on stroke patients. Its management is included in clinical practice guidelines focused on stroke, and the recommended treatment is selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors in conjunction with psychotherapy. Clinical practice guidelines are recommendations used to standardize best medical practice, but there is no current evaluation of guidelines containing post stroke depression recommendations.

Meta-analyses Indicate Associations between Neuroendocrine Activation, Deactivation in Neurotrophic and Neuroimaging Markers in Depression after Stroke
Conclusions: Cortisol-lowering therapies and those that increase blood flow and neurotrophic factors represent promising novel therapeutics for depression subtypes and may reduce the risk of depression in stroke patients.

Correlates of Functional Outcome among Stroke Survivors in a Developing Country–A Prospective Community-based Study from India
Stroke survivors (SS) are rising with higher incidence of stroke in developing countries. In addition to physical impairment, other factors such as cognition, social interaction, and depression determine the functional outcome after stroke. Considering the paucity of data from developing countries, we planned to determine the change in various functional parameters among SS. This community-based prospective study was carried out in Kolkata, India among 283 SS between 2006 and 2010. Functional outcome was assessed at baseline and at 3 annual follow-up visits using validated tools.

The Influence of Depressive Symptoms on Quality of Life after Stroke: A Prospective Study
This study aimed to investigate the impact of depressive symptoms at 1 and 3 months after stroke on the 3-month poststroke HRQOL and to investigate the influence of the HRQOL measured at 1 month after stroke on these relationships.

Decreased Serum Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor May Indicate the Development of Poststroke Depression in Patients with Acute Ischemic Stroke: A Meta-Analysis
Depression is a common complication after stroke and has been associated with poor outcome. Thus, it is of great importance to identify potential biomarkers that can aid in predicting and detecting patients with stroke at high risk of poststroke depression (PSD) development. Previous studies showed that brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) had potential use as a biomarker for discriminating patients with stroke at high risk of PSD. However, the results were inconsistent.
