Characteristics and 12-month outcome of patients with atrial fibrillation at a tertiary hospital in Botswana.
CONCLUSIONS: In this study, hypertension, rheumatic heart disease and heart failure were the most prevalent co-morbidities. AF presented in young people and conferred high mortality rates in both valvular and non-valvular AF patients. Conclusion While no single intervention has been shown to be effective the models of care need to be multidimensional and based on an integration of expertise. Long-term follow-up, training, quality assurance and support for local health workers is essential.
