Comparative effect of statins and types of physical exercise on arterial stiffness: Protocol for network meta-analysis
This study will generate evidence about the effectiveness of both statins and exercise on reducing arterial stiffness that potentially can be transferred to patients and practitioners. Moreover, in light of the importance of reducing arterial stiffness for preventing cardiovascular disease, the evidence provided by this study will be potentially suitable to be included in cardiovascular clinical practice guidelines. Strengths and limitations: This protocol describes the methods of a study examining, using network meta-analysis strategies, the efficacy of statins and different types of exercise on improving arterial stif...

How to continue lipid-lowering therapy in patients with coronary heart disease and severe liver dysfunction?: A case report of plaque regression by a combination of Chinese and Western Medicine
Rationale: Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), including coronary heart disease (CHD), atherosclerotic stroke and peripheral vascular disease, has become the most deadly chronic noncommunicable disease throughout the world in recent decades, while plaque regression could reduce the occurrence of ASCVD. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been widely used for prevention and treatment of these diseases. In the perspective of TCM, phlegm and blood stasis are considered to be leading pathogenesis for CHD. Hence, activating blood circulation and dissipating phlegm, which is of great benefit to regress plaque, h...

Metabolic syndrome risk in relation to posttraumatic stress disorder among trauma-exposed civilians in Gansu Province, China
This study included 1456 men and 1411 women who were trauma-exposed and underwent routine health examinations in a community epidemiological investigation. The participants completed the posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) Check List-Civilian Version (PCL-C) for PTSD and medical examinations to detect metabolic syndrome. Adjustments for age, marriage, exercise, education, cigarette smoking, cancer, stroke, angina, and thyroid disease were performed. The relationship between PTSD and metabolic syndrome and each of its components was analyzed by multiple logistic regression. In women, PTSD was associated with metabolic syn...

Statins reduce new-onset atrial fibrillation after acute myocardial infarction: A nationwide study
The objective of this study was to investigate whether statins confer a beneficial effect on AF after AMI. Data available in the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database on 32886 AMI patients between 2008 and 2011 were retrospectively analyzed. Total 27553 (83.8%) had complete 1-yr follow-up data. Cardiovascular outcomes were analyzed based on the baseline characteristics and AF type (existing, new-onset, or non-AF). AF groups had significantly higher incidence of heart failure (HF), stroke, all-cause death, and major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular event (MACCE) after index AMI (all Pā€Š

Association of total cholesterol and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease in patients with follicular thyroid cancer: A real-world study from Chinese populations
The association between serum total cholesterol (TC) level and incident atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) in patients with follicular thyroid cancer postthyroidectomy is unknown. This was a retrospective study and patients (nā€Š=ā€Š384) were divided into low and high TC groups according to the median TC level. Incidence of composite ASCVD (myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, and cardiovascular death) was compared between these 2 groups and factors contributing to the association of TC and ASCVD were evaluated. Patients in the high TC group were older and more likely to have diabetes and have higher C...
