Cost-Effectiveness Analysis of Alternative Screening and Treatment Strategies for Heterozygous Familial Hypercholesterolemia in the United States
This study evaluates the cost-effectiveness of genetic screening and lipid-based screening with statin adherence measures compared to lipid-based screening alone in the US.

Risk of cardiovascular disease: The effects of diabetes and anti-diabetic drugs — A nested case–control study
Type 2 diabetes (DM) increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. We investigated the effects of antidiabetic drugs on the composite endpoint (CE) of ischemic heart disease, heart failure or stroke in DM patients.

Patterns of cardiovascular drugs prescribed for an elderly Swedish population
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), such as coronary heart disease, atrial fibrillation, heart failure and stroke, are increasingly common as people age. Therefore, cardiovascular drugs are the most frequently prescribed medications for preventive and therapeutic purposes among older adults [1]. However, several factors make cardiovascular drug treatment in elderly people complicated. Age-related pathophysiological changes in the cardiovascular system, liver and kidney can affect the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of commonly used drugs, which makes older persons more vulnerable to adverse drug events [2].

A Brugada-like electrocardiogram pattern induced after radiofrequency catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation
Radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA) of the left atrium (LA) targeting the initiating triggers inside the pulmonary vein (PV) to disconnect PVs has become a very promising and successful treatment in patients with symptomatic and drug refractory atrial fibrillation (AF) of no or minimal structural heart disease [1]. Known complications of RFCA have been defined and investigated, including pulmonary vein stenosis, aortic root and atrial perforation, stroke and pericardial effusion and so on [1,2].

Edentulism associates with poor cardiovascular health. Results from the Atahualpa Project
Edentulism – used as a proxy for chronic inflammatory periodontal disease – has been linked to an increased risk of adverse vascular outcomes [1]. While the importance of this relationship has been studied in industrialized nations, there is scarce information on its public health impact in underserved populations. Limited access to oral health care and lack of awareness on the repercussions of poor dental habits on systemic health contribute to the problem, and may be one of the factors responsible for the increasing burden of stroke and ischemic heart disease in rural areas of Latin America [2].

Adherence to dietary guidelines and cardiovascular disease risk in the EPIC-NL cohort
Global and national dietary guidelines have been created to lower chronic disease risk. The aim of this study was to assess whether greater adherence to the WHO guidelines (Healthy Diet Indicator (HDI)); the Dutch guidelines for a healthy diet (Dutch Healthy Diet-index (DHD-index)); and the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet was associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), coronary heart disease (CHD) or stroke.

Secular changes in rates of coronary heart disease, fatal coronary heart disease, and out-of-hospital fatal coronary heart disease
In the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) surveillance study, out-of-hospital fatal coronary heart disease (CHD) declined more slowly than total fatal CHD over 1987–2008 ; however, the upper age limit was 74 and temporal changes in risk factors and preventive therapies were not considered. To evaluate secular trends in CHD, fatal CHD, and out-of-hospital fatal CHD in a broader age range accounting for changes in risk factors and therapies, we used data from the ARIC cohort study , the Cardiovascular Health Study (CHS) , and the REasons for Geographic And Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) study . ARIC and CHS...

The relationship between insulin-sensitive obesity and cardiovascular diseases in a Chinese population: Results of the REACTION study
Conclusion: Both general and abdominal obesity were associated with elevated prevalent cardiovascular diseases and 10-year CHD risk, regardless of the presence or absence of insulin resistance.

Successful management of a twice complicated case by implantation of three CoreValve prostheses
An 80year old man, diabetic on oral medication and with permanent atrial fibrillation with a single chamber pacemaker, was referred to our hospital for severe symptomatic aortic valve stenosis. His trans-thoracic echocardiography confirmed severe aortic stenosis with a mean/peak gradient of 45/85mmHg, an estimated aortic valve area of 0.7cm2 and good systolic function with an ejection fraction of 50%. His past medical history was remarkable for a minor stroke without neurological impairment and moderate kidney dysfunction with creatinine of 2.3mg/dL. A cardiac catheterization revealed no obstructive coronary heart disease.
