Risk of stroke in patients with heart failure and sinus rhythm: data from the Swedish Heart Failure Registry
ConclusionsIn terms of absolute risk, only 27.6% of patients had an annual IS incidence of ≤1%. To which extent this would be amenable to anticoagulant treatment remains conjectural. A score compiling age and specific co‐morbidities identified HF‐SR patients with increased risk of IS with modest discriminative ability.

Left ventricular output indices and sacubitril/valsartan titration: role of stroke volume index
ConclusionsStroke volume index is positively associated with complete titration of sacubitril/valsartan. Patients with low SVi are more prone to experience hypotension during titration

Echocardiographic pressure –strain loop‐derived stroke work of the right ventricle: validation against the gold standard
ConclusionsIntegrated echo measurement of pressure –strain loop-derived SW correlates with PV loop-based assessment of RV SW. Wasted work correlates with invasive measures of load-independent RV function. Given the methodological and anatomical challenges of RV work assessment, evolution of this approach by incorporating more elaborated echo analy sis data and an RV reference curve might improve its reliability to mirror invasively assessed RV SW.

The prevalence, predictors, and outcomes of spontaneous echocardiographic contrast or left ventricular thrombus in patients with HFrEF
ConclusionsIn patients with HFrEF, SEC was not uncommon and increased risk of ischaemic stroke as well as LVT. Anticoagulants could play a role in the reduction of stroke risk, suggesting that patients with SEC/LVT, even those in sinus rhythm, would benefit from systemic anticoagulation treatment.

WBC count predicts heart failure in diabetes and coronary artery disease patients: a retrospective cohort study
ConclusionsA higher WBC count is a predictor of hospitalization for HF, all-cause death and AMI but not for stroke in patients with concurrent Type 2 diabetes mellitus and established CAD.

Atrial cardiomyopathy: from cell to bedside
AbstractAtrial cardiomyopathy refers to structural and electrical remodelling of the atria, which can lead to impaired mechanical function. While historical studies have implicated atrial fibrillation as the leading cause of cardioembolic stroke, atrial cardiomyopathy may be an important, underestimated contributor. To date, the relationship between atrial cardiomyopathy, atrial fibrillation, and cardioembolic stroke remains obscure. This review summarizes the pathogenesis of atrial cardiomyopathy, with a special focus on neurohormonal and inflammatory mechanisms, as well as the role of adipose tissue, especially epicardia...

Risk of death associated with incident heart failure in patients with known or suspected chronic coronary syndrome
ConclusionsIn patients with CCS, long-term rates of incident HF were higher than MI and stroke. Patients with new-onset HF showed a higher risk of long-term mortality.

Heart failure: a weak link in CHA2DS2 ‐VASc
ConclusionsA clinical diagnosis of heart failure was not an independent risk factor for stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation, which may have implications for anticoagulation management.

Characteristics and 2 ‐year outcomes of dabigatran treatment in patients with heart failure and atrial fibrillation: GLORIA‐AF
ConclusionsPatients with AF and history of HF may have greater disease burden at AF diagnosis and increased mortality rates vs. patients without HF. Stroke and major bleeding rates were roughly comparable between groups confirming the long ‐term safety and effectiveness of dabigatran in patients with HF.

Short ‐term and long‐term outcomes of revascularization interventions for patients with severely reduced left ventricular ejection fraction: a meta‐analysis
ConclusionsAmong patients with severely reduced LV ejection fraction, CABG resulted in a lower mortality rate and an increased risk of stroke.

Use of Mendelian randomization to evaluate the effect of atrial fibrillation on cardiovascular diseases and cardiac death
ConclusionsThis comprehensive MR analysis verified the causal associations between atrial fibrillation and high risks of heart failure, ischaemic stroke, transient ischaemic attack, peripheral artery diseases, cardiac death, and hypertension. Interventions to reduce cardiovascular diseases beyond ischaemic stroke are warranted in patients with atrial fibrillation.

Heart failure is independently associated with white matter lesions: insights from the population ‐based LIFE‐Adult Study
ConclusionsIn addition to age, hypertension, and stroke, the prevalence and duration of HF are independently associated with WML. This observation sets the stage to investigate the prognostic value of WML in HF and the impact of HF therapies on WML.
