Clinical characteristics of hemodialysis patients with atrial fibrillation: The RAKUEN (Registry of atrial fibrillation in chronic kidney disease under hemodialysis from Niigata) study.
CONCLUSIONS: In our hemodialysis patients, AF was a common comorbidity and was independently associated with all-cause death and major bleeding, but not with increased risk of ischemic stroke. PMID: 26527113 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Predictive value of acute kidney injury for major adverse cardiovascular events following tricuspid annuloplasty: A comparison of three consensus criteria.
CONCLUSION: Our data suggest AKI affects over half of all patients who undergo TA, and has a major and long-lasting impact on survival, MACE, and heart failure. Use of AKIN and KDIGO is more useful than the RIFLE criteria when determining the prognostic value of AKI for mortality beyond 30 days. PMID: 29599099 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

D-dimer levels in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation and acute heart failure treated with edoxaban
CONCLUSIONS: D-dimer levels may be elevated in patients with NVAF and AHF, particularly in those without prior anticoagulant treatment. Edoxaban may be effective for lowering and keeping D-dimer levels, a biomarker for predicting ischemic stroke, below the reference value in patients with NVAF and AHF.PMID:35148920 | DOI:10.1016/j.jjcc.2022.01.005

Long-term outcome and risk factors associated with events in patients with atrial fibrillation treated with oral anticoagulants: The ASSAF-K registry
CONCLUSIONS: This multi-center registry demonstrated the long-term outcome in patients with AF treated with and without OACs and suggests that DOAC therapy is safe and beneficial in hospitals and clinics.PMID:36109256 | DOI:10.1016/j.jjcc.2022.08.012

Prognostic impact of heart rate during atrial fibrillation on clinical outcomes in elderly non-valvular atrial fibrillation patients: ANAFIE Registry sub-cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: Elderly Japanese patients with non-paroxysmal NVAF and a heart rate ≥110 bpm have an increased risk of cardiac events. There was no interaction between heart rate category and the relative risk of adverse clinical events in patients taking DOACs compared with those taking warfarin.PMID:36427691 | DOI:10.1016/j.jjcc.2022.11.011

Heart failure: What does ejection fraction have to do with it?
Abstract Heart failure (HF) occurs across the entire range of left ventricular (LV) ejection fractions (EF), not just reduced EF. Nearly half or more patients presenting with HF have a preserved EF>0.50 (HFpEF). Diastolic dysfunction is apparent in all patients with HF, regardless of EF. A preserved EF indicates that the end-diastolic volume is appropriate for the stroke volume, and a reduced EF indicates that the end-diastolic volume is enlarged relative to stroke volume (i.e. the LV is dilated). Most therapies proven to be effective in HF with a reduced EF (ACE-inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers, beta-...

Sleep apnea and cardiovascular risk.
Abstract Sleep apnea is evident in approximately 10% of adults in the general population, but in certain cardiovascular diseases, and in particular those characterized by sodium and water retention, its prevalence can exceed 50%. Although sleep apnea is not as yet integrated into formal cardiovascular risk assessment algorithms, there is increasing awareness of its importance in the causation or promotion of hypertension, coronary artery disease, heart failure, atrial arrhythmias, and stroke, and thus, not surprisingly, as a predictor of premature cardiovascular death. Sleep apnea manifests as two principal phenot...

Disease duration and severity impacts on long-term cardiovascular events in Japanese patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
CONCLUSION: Japanese RA patients showed a relatively high incidence of CVD, despite the fact that they had few coronary risk factors. The RA disease duration was an independent risk factor for CVEs. PMID: 24685688 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Myocardial performance index derived from pre-ejection period as a novel and useful predictor of cardiovascular events in atrial fibrillation.
CONCLUSIONS: In AF patients, the PEPa-derived MPI was a useful predictor of adverse cardiovascular events and could offer an additional prognostic benefit over conventional clinical and echocardiographic parameters. PMID: 25156166 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
