Sex differences of lipoprotein(a) levels and associated risk of morbidity and mortality by age: The Copenhagen General Population Study
CONCLUSIONS: Lipoprotein(a) levels increased modestly around age 50 selectively in women; however, risk of morbidity and mortality for high lipoprotein(a) was similar in women and men above age 50. This implies that elevated lipoprotein(a) above age 50 is a relatively more common cardiovascular risk factor in women, pointing toward repeat measurements in women above age 50.PMID:35803767 | DOI:10.1016/j.atherosclerosis.2022.06.1023

Early statin use and cardiovascular outcomes after myocardial infarction: A population-based case-control study
CONCLUSIONS: Lack of statin therapy early after MI is associated with adverse outcomes across the spectrum of MI patients. Results underline the importance of timely statin use after MI.PMID:35803064 | DOI:10.1016/j.atherosclerosis.2022.06.1019

Role of Platelet in Parkinson's Disease: Insights into Pathophysiology & amp; Theranostic Solutions
Ageing Res Rev. 2022 Jul 4:101681. doi: 10.1016/j.arr.2022.101681. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTParkinson's disease (PD) is the second-most-common neurodegenerative disease characterized by motor and non-motor dysfunctions, which currently affects about 10 million people worldwide. Gradual death and progressive loss of dopaminergic neurons in the pars compacta region of substantia nigra results in striatal dopamine deficiency in PD. Specific mutation with further aggregation of α-synuclein in the intraneuronal inclusion bodies is considered the neuropathological hallmark of this disease. PD is often associated with vario...

NF- κB, A Potential Therapeutic Target in Cardiovascular Diseases
Cardiovasc Drugs Ther. 2022 Jul 7. doi: 10.1007/s10557-022-07362-8. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death globally. Atherosclerosis is the basis of major CVDs - myocardial ischemia, heart failure, and stroke. Among numerous functional molecules, the transcription factor nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) has been linked to downstream target genes involved in atherosclerosis. The activation of the NF-κB family and its downstream target genes in response to environmental and cellular stress, hypoxia, and ischemia initiate different pathological events such as innate and adaptiv...

What Is or What Is Not a Risk Factor for Arterial Hypertension? Not Hamlet, but Medical Students Answer That Question
Int J Environ Res Public Health. 2022 Jul 5;19(13):8206. doi: 10.3390/ijerph19138206.ABSTRACTHypertension is a leading cause of cardiovascular disease and premature death worldwide. The most important method of preventing hypertension is social awareness of its causes. An important role in educating society about hypertension is played by medical personnel. The study involved 327 students of medicine representing all years of study. The study used a proprietary questionnaire containing test questions about knowledge of the causes of hypertension (classical and non-classical factors), as well as questionable and false risk ...

Cardiovascular complications of diabetes
Expert Rev Endocrinol Metab. 2022 Jul 13:1-6. doi: 10.1080/17446651.2022.2099838. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is the ninth leading cause of mortality globally, and the prevalence continues to rise. Among individuals with T2DM, over two-thirds of deaths are caused by the cardiovascular complications of diabetes. These complications include atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease, nephropathy, stroke, thromboembolism, peripheral vascular disease. They have been long studied, and there are several theories as to the pathophysiology of how diabetes leads to these complications. ...

New Approaches for Enhancement of the Efficacy of Mesenchymal Stem Cell-Derived Exosomes in Cardiovascular Diseases
Tissue Eng Regen Med. 2022 Jul 22. doi: 10.1007/s13770-022-00469-x. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain a major health concern worldwide, where mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) therapy gives great promise in their management through their regenerative and paracrine actions. In recent years, many studies have shifted from the use of transplanted stem cells to their secreted exosomes for the management of various CVDs and cardiovascular-related diseases including atherosclerosis, stroke, myocardial infarction, heart failure, peripheral arterial diseases, and pulmonary hypertension. In different m...

Young mother with lupus and life-altering cardiocerebrovascular nightmare: a case report
CONCLUSION: Recognizing and anticipating gender-specific issues in managing patients with SLE are keys to preventing catastrophic complications. Multi-disciplinary team involvement is critical in dealing with complex cases.PMID:35898406 | PMC:PMC9311826 | DOI:10.1093/ehjcr/ytac293

Cardiovascular protection by DPP-4 inhibitors in preclinical studies: an updated review of molecular mechanisms
Naunyn Schmiedebergs Arch Pharmacol. 2022 Aug 10. doi: 10.1007/s00210-022-02279-3. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP4) inhibitors are a class of antidiabetic medications that cause glucose-dependent increase in incretins in diabetic patients. One of the two incretins, glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), beside its insulinotropic activity, has been studied for extra pancreatic effects. Most of DPP4 inhibitors (DPP4i) have been investigated in in vivo and in vitro models of diabetic and nondiabetic cardiovascular diseases including heart failure, hypertension, myocardial ischemia or infarction, atheroscl...

Matrix metalloproteinase 3 and 9 as genetic biomarkers for the occurrence of cardiovascular complications in coronary artery disease: a prospective cohort study
CONCLUSION: Our study suggests the disruption of the MMP-3 level may be due to the existence of the polymorphism - 1612 residing in its promoter region. MMP-3 can be considered as a marker of diagnosis and prediction in cardiovascular events.PMID:35960412 | DOI:10.1007/s11033-022-07742-1

Sex differences in comorbidities associated with Sj ögren's disease
CONCLUSIONS: The top comorbidities in Sjögren's disease were fibromyalgia, depression, and pain. Women with Sjögren's disease had a higher relative risk of developing fibromyalgia, depression, pain, migraine, hypermobile syndrome, EDS and other rheumatic autoimmune diseases. Men with Sjögren's disease had higher risk of developing cardiovascular diseases.PMID:35991633 | PMC:PMC9387724 | DOI:10.3389/fmed.2022.958670
