The Relationship Between Atrial Fibrillation, Mitral Regurgitation, and Heart Failure Subtype: The ARIC Study
CONCLUSIONS: In patients with ADHF, AF prevalence increased with MR severity and this effect was more pronounced in HFpEF compared with HFrEF. AF was associated with an increased 1-year mortality only in patients with HFpEF and concomitant moderate/severe MR.REGISTRATION: NCT00005131, https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT00005131.PMID:34955335 | DOI:10.1016/j.cardfail.2021.10.015

Utility of S100A12 as an Early Biomarker in Patients With ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction
Conclusions and Relevance: S100A12 rapidly identified patients with STEMI, more accurately than other cardiac biomarkers, especially within the first 2 h after symptom onset. The peak plasma S100A12 level was a strong predictor of 1-year prognosis after STEMI.PMID:34977174 | PMC:PMC8718434 | DOI:10.3389/fcvm.2021.747511

Ferroptosis Signaling and Regulators in Atherosclerosis
Front Cell Dev Biol. 2021 Dec 16;9:809457. doi: 10.3389/fcell.2021.809457. eCollection 2021.ABSTRACTAtherosclerosis (AS) is a major cause of cardiovascular diseases such as coronary heart disease, heart failure and stroke. Abnormal lipid metabolism, oxidative stress and inflammation are the main features of AS. Ferroptosis is an iron-driven programmed cell death characterized by lipid peroxidation, which have been proved to participate in the development and progression of AS by different signal pathways. NRF2-Keap1 pathway decreases ferroptosis associated with AS by maintaining cellular iron homeostasis, increasing the pr...

Anti-Inflammatory Effects of Thymoquinone in Atherosclerosis: A Mini Review
Front Pharmacol. 2021 Dec 15;12:758929. doi: 10.3389/fphar.2021.758929. eCollection 2021.ABSTRACTAtherosclerosis poses serious health problems and increases the risk of various cardiovascular diseases, including myocardial infarction, heart failure, ischemic stroke, and peripheral arterial disease. Atherosclerosis patients require long-term medications to prevent complications, some of which are costly and may result in unwanted adverse reactions. Natural products have emerged as potential sources of bioactive compounds that provide health benefits in cardiovascular diseases. Increased inflammation and vascular remodeling ...

Prevalence and prognostic significance of polyvascular disease in patients hospitalized with acute decompensated heart failure: The ARIC study
CONCLUSION: Patients hospitalized with ADHF and coexisting polyvascular disease have an increased risk of death, irrespective of HF type. Clinical attention should be directed toward polyvascular disease, with implementation of secondary prevention strategies to improve the prognosis of this high-risk population.SUMMARY: Polyvascular disease is known to be associated with myocardial infarction, stroke or cardiovascular death and is a major risk factor for decreased quality of life. This study sought to evaluate the relationship between polyvascular disease and mortality in patients hospitalized with acute decompensated hea...

Air pollution and cardiovascular disease: the Paul Wood Lecture, British Cardiovascular Society 2021
Heart. 2022 Jan 24:heartjnl-2021-319844. doi: 10.1136/heartjnl-2021-319844. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAir pollution is associated with up to 8.8 million excess deaths worldwide each year and is a major contributor to the global burden of disease. Cardiovascular conditions are the predominant cause for air pollution-related deaths and there is an urgent need to address the silent pandemic of air pollution on cardiovascular health. Air pollution exposure is associated with acute events like acute coronary syndrome and stroke, and with chronic conditions, such as atherosclerosis and heart failure. Several potential mechan...

Hypertension Management in Primary Care in the Capital Area of Iceland
CONCLUSION: As has recently been shown in epidemiologic studies hypertension in Iceland is both underdiagnosed and undertreated although the country ranks high on both counts in international comparison. Furthermore, the fact that under half of hypertensive patients in general practice in the capital area reach the targeted treatment goals, cannot be considered an acceptable. Thus, it is of immense importance to improve both the diagnosis and the treatment of HT.PMID:35103619 | DOI:10.17992/lbl.2022.02.675

Ischemic risk in patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction: A post hoc analysis of the TOPCAT data
CONCLUSIONS: HFpEF patients from Americas were at a high risk of ischemic events, which was associated with mortality risk. A subset of baseline characteristics and HF hospitalization during follow-up could predict ischemic event.PMID:35101783 | DOI:10.1016/j.atherosclerosis.2022.01.013

Lifetime Cardiovascular Disease Risk by Coronary Artery Calcium Score in Individuals With and Without Diabetes: An Analysis From the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis
CONCLUSIONS: Patients with diabetes carry a spectrum of CVD risk. CAC scoring may improve decisions for preventive interventions for patients with diabetes by better delineating lifetime CVD risk.PMID:35168253 | DOI:10.2337/dc21-1607

Incidence of atrial fibrillation in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus
CONCLUSIONS: Annually, 1 in 200 elderly Japanese patients with T2D are estimated to develop AF. Because elderly patients with T2D with AF are at an elevated risk for CVD, careful follow-up of this patient subgroup is necessary.TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: NCT00110448.PMID:35361621 | DOI:10.1136/bmjdrc-2021-002745
